B features some brilliant production and arrangement, in fact it is all about production and arrangement, because there is not much of a song below. I had no problem in getting through tlll the end but other that the craft skills shown there was not much left. And the lady singing sure had some pipes, but she overused them to the point of being annoying after so many minutes.

Holloway Jail is one of the gems inside the last great album by The KInks. Unlike some previous posters I love the guitrar treatment and the loose production, I think it adds a lot to the delicacy of Ray's melodic abilities. I love this song unconditionally.

The Kinks track was okay but not substantial enough for my ears.

B I enjoyed, despite not usually being y thing, but I had enough after 5 minutes.

I liked both without being wild about either. I'm not convinced B was strong enough to justify its 13 minutes but had enough qualities to nab the vote

B is the winner here. I like Muswell Hillbillies and all, but something about this track doesn't work for me.

"Muswell Hillbillies" was a good 70s album by Kinks, but the chosen track sounds lazy and perfunctory.

B is new to me and sounds fantastic. It could go on for twice as long and I'd still reward it.

A fails to move me.

B is a truly excellent pick. It didn’t go on too long at all – I listened twice!

Darkness_Fish wrote:I always had a soft-spot for The Kinks, compared to the other 60s/70s behemoths, Ray Davies always had an ear for a creative lyric, and could transform the mundane into something sincerely poetic. Unfortunately, this is a horrible pub knees up that's closer to Ian Hunter than anyone should ever hope to get. As G said, it's just not as light as their best work, the guitar bogs it right down.

I'm a huge Arthur Russell fan, whether it be disco, classical, country rock, or ambient cello fuzz, he remained distinctive and remarkably listenable. I prefer this to some of his later disco works (I'm a sucker for his cello fuzz though), the more organic instrumentation works better than on the later (perhaps more forward-thinking) Dinosaur L tracks. You have to wonder how he managed to get David Byrne to provide uncredited guitar on this single, too. Yeah, it might go on a bit too long, but it never loses its impetus, or runs out of ideas. Just a poor choice for a cup where people are hoping for classy three-minute pop smarts.

I’d never heard the Kinks track before and I agree it’s not in the same league as their primo stuff. Still enjoyed it. However, it’s up against a corker of an avant disco banger that is up my strasse.

Both new to me
a - this is OK in a plodding sort of way - hardly a 'knees-up' except for arthritics, and not remotely like Ian Hunter – but very low on colour and excitement 4 / 10
b - once I got over the disappointment of no J Mascis (wrong decade, I know :-)), I had to deal with the absurd length of it; because (now it can be told) I'm quite a fan of the cello, listened to it for far longer than I intended. And Lo, when it came it was a disappointment. I love production, female vocalists (especially those with soul inclinations) and 12" mixes, but fuck me this was dull. And as I typed this, ten minutes in, it changed a bit, just for a few seconds, then went back. It's prog for dancers, basically, so not for me. 3 / 10

A for boring me for a shorter period of time

B is an interesting discovery for me, but I dearly love "Holloway Jail" -- one of my favorites from an album of great songs.
