Re: 70s Cup Round 3 Match 5
Two choices that i can get behind in different ways. I'm a fan of 70's Motown and the arrangement on that Jacksons track is super fine, it's just a little syrupy but of course natural for a ballad. The SP cut has wonderful playing and singing, but also a really strong arrangement too i think, with dubby elements and heaps of hooks. So, it's close but A.

Steel Pulse's Handsworth Revolution is the only reggae album I have (other than UB40). I recall seeing the at Leicester's De Montfort Hall in Leicester at the time of the release of this album. They were excellent. I really like the album and this track is a corker. Seminally robust.
The Jackson 5,to whom I have limited knowledge, have made some stuff that I have enjoyed. Sadly this track selection isn't one of them. Not my type of thing at all - somewhat dreary to my old ears.
So, easy:

close one, but Steel Pulse might be the only British reggae band that matters

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

A is probably the best reggae song we've had in the cup so far, along with the Toots track. Didn't much care for B I'm afraid.

I saw the J5 and thought this would be a walk. gotta go with the Steel Pulse. B is the least of what I like about the Jacksons.

Not only was I really disappointed to discover that B isn't the original of the theme tune to The Littlest Hobo, I was disappointed to have to sit through such a cloying, saccharine abomination. I've seen adverts for My Little Pony that are less schmaltzy.
A is average.

I like my reggae politicised as hell. Actually this fits the bill in that respect.

Dearie me, B is taking a hell of a tonking. A is probably the superior track though but I’m not entirely sold. Rough tie, B

Re: 70s Cup Round 3 Match 5
a - As with the other Steel Pulse track this round, this really benefits from a decent recording. I didn't like them at all back then, but I've changed my mind. It may have had something to do with seeing and hearing them on a 1970s television. The people I knew who were into Reggae were more likely to be hunting pres down the Portobello Road than buying readily available mainstream stuff. 5.5 / 10
b - So, not the Everly Brothers number. Anywya, I was fond of the Jacksons, bought a lot of their singles, but felt they lost their edge with the ballads and saccharine arrangements that became more common in Motown once they moved to LA in the 1970 (?). this is an example. I mean, apart from the strings there's a French horn and someting that sounded like a harp glissando. I suspect that the voices were as fine as ever, but I could barely hear them above the orchestra. Great group for a while, but this one's not for me 4.5
