Not the absolute greatest Miles cut from the era, but still an absorbing groove.
The Sly one is decent but goes on a bit by comparison.

This wasn't my 70s. This wasn't my Miles. Those aren't my feet. I guess I should vote for this, just because I am the real Yaphet Kotto, as my avatar clearly indicates, and this song was named after me. Probably. Cheers Miles, but could I have it done in a silent way, please? That sitar could do a bit more, couldn't it, it feels like it's just there completely unnecessarily. I guess if I put the effort in, I could listen to this one and enjoy it, but I don't feel like putting that effort in right now.

B is an exercise in patience, isn't it? I guess if you sit through it you can achieve a higher plane of consciousness or something, but I'm as thick as fuck and prefer something to happen on this plane.

Nice try, but we all know you're actually the screenwriter to Providence. :D

Anyhow, I kinda like A, it sort of reminds me of Alice Coltrane although I'm missing the sheer power and dynamism a player like Pharoah Sanders could bring into the mix, this in contrast feels a lot more muted. But still, pretty cool, and a new Davis track for me at least. I dig the Sly track too, though it's a familiar one to me. So, A.

Good match, but a difficult choice - transcendental expansion or focused minimalism?

Let it grow.

I must drop in more anecdotes about the great times Bogarde, Gielgud, and I had down King Street. Loved a a few pints, a kebab, and table-dancing in Jumping Jacks, did Gielgud.

A is damned good and far more interesting than B’s plodding funk / soul thing.

The kind of expansive, explorative spacey jazz on offer from Miles is the “kind of thing”I feel I should be settling into as I push 50 but it’s still more interesting than enjoyable for me. And the Sly track is maybe not him at his most graceful and melodic but that still a groove, homes.

B is brilliant. I'm once again bewildered that that isn't obvious to all and sundry. I mean, I wouldn't say it's better than the original, but I'm really glad both exist. Turning something so light and celebratory into something so dark and ominous is kind of that era of Sly in a nutshell. And nothing could be more 70s than a recognition of how the good vibes were turning to harder drugs, dissonance and violence. And think of the title - he's being himself indeed. It is a contradiction so so is he. So are the times. One of the greatest tracks of the decade, honestly.

A is good Miles, but it doesn't loom anywhere near as huge.

The Miles track is atmospheric, has interesting sounds and interesting rhythms. The Sly track was tedious.

Miles really surprised me. I need to spend some time checking out some of those 70s-albums.
