Great match! Love both, but i'm not really surprising myself by going with the extraordinary Toots song. It's just so perfect. Tough draw, A, could have had my vote in several other ties.

Lou's in somnabulist mode here, did he even know the tape was rolling? If it was just that low buzzing noise in the background, and didn't have the vocals, guitar, or drums, or keyboard, and I could then turn that low buzzing noise off, then I might vote for this. What were you thinking, Mr O'Dead?

"54-46 Was My Number" is a bit of a monster. A bit late in the ska-lineage to be absolutely top draw, sound wise, because I preferred the more rough and ready reverb, and the more uptempo mid 60s stuff. But this wasn't a 70s track was it, or is it a different version to the original single? It doesn't deserve to lose to Lou, and it would win most rounds. In a 60s cup.

If it's a 70s song, B has it.

I think you're right -69. I wasn't sure, I knew it was around the cusp of the decade. Risky pick!

That's My Number was 1969. Was My Number, featured here, was a sequel - earliest discogs have it is 1971 on a Trojan comp.

I found the Lou track rather naff to be honest. But the Toots track is great. B

i dunno. i like this lou, cuz it's kinda over the top and gweetar-laden, with the sick thing that always appeals to me.

the toots track is a prime example of what i mean when i say bouncebouncebounce.

therefore, i am torn (owwww) in two directions.

...

... going with lou. i've got a minor injury right now, and bouncing may spell trouble.

It’s really odd that this has happened three times now - back to back Slade, Curtis, Lou. Anyway, unlike Coney Island Baby, I’m not keen on Sally Can’t Dance -but that’s the clear highlight for me. It’s a belter. And it’s against a cracker from Toots, right out that Dave & Ansel Collins era of clunking rude boy pop reggae. But it’s not good enough to beat the Lou. Sorry.

Nice match up love both songs.
Tend to listen to live versions these days.

I''ll give the edge to Lou because of the live versions. Tough call..

Clever - they did a twist on it. A little twist.

B is fucking brilliant and utterly crushes a cut from what is possibly Lou Reed's worst album.

B by default. Sally Can't Dance is one of the most uneventful Lou Reed solo efforts in my book, and I honestly find much of quite awful.

I like B a lot, but it's kind of the middle-aged music nerd's go-to reggae track. (I realize that's kind of a redundant statement  )

A strays from the ordinary as Reed goes, and while I don't agree with Coan that it's a particularly good album, that is probably the best track on it.

An awful Lou Reed track vs. a Toots tune I've heard entirely too many times. Ugh.

B, I guess.

Very good match (and better Lou Reed track than the other one in this round), but right now, I enjoyed Toots more.
