Re: 70s Cup Round 2 Match 6
Interesting choices. My first instinct was to wonder "why this B-BD era and not a bit earlier?", but it's grown on me as i've played it a couple of times. B is really nice too instrumentally, and while his voice is a little folky for my taste it's not a deal breaker by any means. But, i'm surprising myself and going for the poppy but fun A.

Re: 70s Cup Round 2 Match 6
i thought A was likable, listenable, etc.
but i absolutely loved B. i've never heard any of basho's stuff before. the gweetar is fantastic. i get why some don't like the vocals, but i did. the vocal even sounded familiar, like the way i heard people singing out in the sticks when i was young. plaintive and evocative.
one of my fave turn-ons in this cup.

Don't like either. But if I HAD to listen to one of them again, I guess it would be

Though I like solo Bill Nelson as well as Red Noise, Be Bop Deluxe never did much for me and this case is no exception. B is superb, on the other hand, and the wonderful, evocative vocals are a great part of its appeal.

Jesus. Where’s the be-bop? It would be preferable to that dreck. And I detest Jazz.
B. I feel shit for voting for it.

Strange old Cup, some ties are two fantastic songs fighting for your A or B. Other ties.... well, A is indeed polished FM rock that I instinctively run away from but it has enough to beat B which is not much of a song and is sunk further by the unpleasant ‘singing’.

Basho is one of those artists that I'd heard of, so when a promo CD showed up at work I grabbed it and listened. I like him much better when he doesn't sing. But even then it's not charmless.
I've heard some BBD tracks I've liked. This isn't one of them.

B's vocal is an acquired taste and I haven't acquired it. But I did think the playing was rather beautiful. Intriguing enough to make me want to investigate this artist further.

my thoughts too although I've heard some of his stuff before. Love the acoustic finger picking.
me too and a lot of people call them prog.C wrote:Be Bop Deluxe are pleasant enough - I have a couple of their albums but never play them. That's not suggest they haven't got any robustness because they have. The track selection is reasonable enough and bops along quite nicely if a little poppy for me.

More 70s driving music for mid-life crisis dads up against some beautiful guitar pickings with gorgeous and unique vocals over the top of it?
B and then some.

I listened to Be Bop Deluxe's Thin Lizzy-meets-Boston's stylings and just thought "why did they bother?"
Then I read through the comments and was expecting something entirely different from Basho than his Tiny Tim-at-16rpm warbling, which actually put a smile on my face. I thought it was quite pleasant.

I love Be Bop Deluxe, a big fan of Bill Nelsons guitar playing. A

I like Bebop Deluxe a lot, and this song is no exception.
But I prefer B, some very nice moments (and the voice doesn't bother me).

It's hard to vote against the power pop perfection of track A, but the Basho track is one of the most beautiful and moving things, vocal included, I've heard in a while.

a - Can't remember why exactly, but I took against Bill Nelson from the start. This reminds me, though, how he was all style and no real substance. This song reminds me hugely of something else, but I just can't place it (Tom Petty, maybe??). It's not bad as this sort of thing went in the 1970s, better than I was expecting, but ultimately nothing to get hung about. 4 / 10
b - totally unfamiliar to me, although I know his reputation as a guitarist, and there's some timeless, light-fingered stuff in the introduction, but I'm intrigued to hear this voice that's exercised most of the previous voters. Oh, ffs, that's tremendous, especially when he gives up on enunciation altogether, and just kind of warbles over the skipping guitars. It's another instrument. I actually liked this. Hoorah! 6.5 / 10

B sounds like a mix of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" and Jon Bon Jovi's "Blaze Of Glory" sung by a man yelping down a payphone.
A doesn't.
