Two tracks I'm completely unfamiliar with...

The Philly track is pleasant enough with a sweet lead vocal but never quite gets out of that initial phase... there's a lot of similar stuff and it doesn't really distinguish itself from that.

The first track starts off as a lovely lilting bossa nova but then explodes at around the two minute mark into a whole different animal. Marvellous strings and horns, interjecting quite angrily and aggressively on occasion.... I love it!

Wow, I did know that Chico Buarque song in Spanish by an Argentinian female singer, Nacha Guevara, who was quite successful with it round here. I had no idea it was from this artist, this is much, much better. Lyrics are essential, it is worth reading the translation to grasp the song fully.

B is nice enough, nothing wrong with it, but A is wonderful. Sorry

I probably need to spend more time on these - they're unfamiliar and they're subtle.

On first listen I'll go for A as it's slightly less tedious.

I loved the sudden change of pace in A, it really moved it up a gear. B was just too smooth for me.

Neither of these two tracks are to my liking.

I found both somewhat tedious and going nowhere.

Abstain

Only just discovered Chico Buarque in thrift recently, but Norman Connors is like an "old friend". B

A is terrifying.

B is, again, so smooth that I can't even cope with it. It makes me think of medallion-wearing, permed chestwig lotharios; the type that sidles up to you in a bar and offers to soak their maraschino cherry in your pina colada.

A ( fearful that it might hide under my bed and attack me if I don't vote for it ).

Two interesting selections here.
I don't know the Chico Burque ( I can't even spell it correctly!). It sounded pretty standard Brazilian of the time, not especially distinctive, but the introduction of the John Barryesque horns and strings certainly added a much fresher dimension, even if it appeared to come from a totally different song.
The likes of B are about as welcome with BCB as Noel Chomsky at a tea party convention. As someone who has defended Luther and Grover to my appalled BCB bethren (with only Sloop for support), I feel naturally predisposed towards it. But in truth all the comments it will inevitably get referencing wine bars, the music tastes of 80s footballers and provincial djs with moustaches have some basis in truth. It is rather bland and forgettable after all.

So that's an A

I have heard A before but listening to it with the lyrics made me appreciate it more; nice find, A. Odd fact: Chico Buarque is now an award-winning author.
B is a little too smoooooove and the actual song doesn't stand out. I like the spaceship pad he's found on the synth though.

The name's Nova. Bossa Nova. I can't cope with this stuff, it's a music form ruined by being recreated on the single press of a Casio keyboard, and will never sounds anything but naff to me because of it. Can you have overly dramatic cheese? Meloleerdammerratic. Nah, that didn't work, did it? Fuck off, Fish, and stop talking to yourself in the comments of a BCB cup.

Woah, B kicks off being absolute anathema to me with it's lame tinkly smoooooth jahzz intro. Raises eyebrow, orders a cocktail, clicks finger and points at a lady in the crowd. "yooooo are my starship, come take me up toniiiight".

Ah this is a load of old bollocks this, there's not much to say about the music, and I'm just spouting gibberish here. I've had a mare.

Abstain
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

A sounds like a theme for a low budget, Brazilian Bond remake...B is a slick lump of a track..

So, a thick slice of Brazilian cheese or Warm, sweet gruel in a thick paste...?...hmmmm...Slight edge to A

Both tracks were previously unknown to.

B is more appealing to me.

The post Tropicalia stylings of the Chico Buarque pick are ace - a genuine find in this here Cup. What a strange concoction -the James Bond/John Barry comments are all bang on and elevate this wonderfully. Could you have a more 1976 name than ‘Norman Connors’? Anyway, this is all a bit Smooth FM, which I have to listen to quite a bit as penance, but without the danger and thrills of, say, the Commodores or Fat Larry’s Band. Even for someone with a tolerance for cheesy listening, this is a little rich. Easy
