That's always my conflict with these kinda of things. I was thinking of the Linval Thompson pick. If it were me, I would've chosen an early Wailers song like Stir It Up or brighter spots in the decade, like Justin Hinds or Toots and the Maytals, to reflect the transition from ska to reggae or a Max Romeo song from War Ina Babylon. I wouldn't have picked anything from The Harder They Come, although there are some great songs on there.

Googa doesn't think like that! :D

The main cup has disappeared up its arse. We've picked everything there is I think, which is why any list, no matter how imaginatively put together, is likely to be met with a jaded cynicism. I like the simplicity of this format, it gets back to the idea of songs without all the other contextual bollocks.

Shame it was won by a tone-deaf numpty.

Champion Tone-Deaf Numpty, thanks very much.

:(
Contextual bollocks is my strong suit.

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Can I ask the Rules Committee a question please:

Can you include a cover (released in the 70's) of a tune originally released in a previous decade?

Covers are OK, as long as the chosen recording was released in the 70s.

Second round looks better. Some expected big names showing up too (Bowie, Reed, Sly, Roxy ...)

As promised, I'm compiling a Spotify playlist, I will post the link once it's all finished. Unfortunately a few tracks are not available there (Slade, for a start)
Nobody's ferpect.

I have to say I am detecting an unfortunate strain of rockism in some of the voting. A shame.

Round 2 sees the first appearance of the 70s overlords - Bowie and Roxy Music. No surprise as they owned the decade.

I haven't noticed so much of that, but it wouldn't surprise me either. There's been a very noticeable bias towards the musically smoother side of 70s music (so far, at least) and barely a whiff of proto-punk/punk. No Dolls, no Pere Ubu, no Patti, no Iggy. Have we even had any punk?

I know that G, Clive, Ange, Machuki would all prefer to shake their strides to Roy Ayers than Wire, so I guess all this is reflective of the board's taste. Just not of the decade itself.

There is that block - although Clive's too cool to vote these days -but it's definitely outweighed by the prog/alternative/post-punk one. Soul tracks are struggling in the voting so far, Callier is getting a right kicking in the comments!

That was a lot of the '70s. That's saying there was lots of yacht rock. There was.
