Two absolutely colossal picks.

A is closer to my heart.

Two geniuses, but A would get played more often.

Even though B is overplayed chez K-Tel, it still edges the Mayfield track.

I was surprised at how laidback A was, as much of what I've heard from Curtis is far more urgent. It was dull, truth to tell. B is pretty standard Beefheart, but is far more fun.

Love them both, but Beefheart is my main man and B is an absolute killer track. And SO much fun ('difficult music for hippies' my arse)

A is good but it's 2nd tier Curtis.

B is huge of course. The first time I ever heard it I played it about ten times in row.

The Captain - that's more like it!

A great track from a great album.

Curtis is not my thing and I found it uninteresting and bland

Is there another artist who can sound so simultaneously joyous and heartbreaking as Curtis Mayfield? This track typifies that as it is a lament for the returning soldiers from Vietnam, but one that offers hope and redemption. I love the surging interplay of the strings and brass with Curtis' voice gliding on top. Hugely powerful and top tier Curtis from his most underrated album.
B has a nervous energy which is a lot of fun, but it doesn't have the depth of A.

Is Curtis the one artist with universal approval on BCB? One of those artists that could sing the phone book, and that sweet falsetto and slick, funky production would make it a worthwhile listen.

Captain Beefheart is very hit-and-miss for me, but this is a major strike. I prefer him when he's doing a blues jam, anyway.

See G's commentary for why. Love Curtis.
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

It's not Grade A Curtis and it is actually one of the more listenable Beefheart tunes.

So A only wins it by 63 gazillion light years.
