Will there be a glut of Curtis? Maybe he’s too obvious a pick.
It was a photo finish so I listened to each twice.

There's something acutely annoying about Beefheart that I just can't get past. Easy win for Curtis.

Fab match. Very hard to choose between these as both were on my long lists of tracks to sort through, and while they are very different they represent essential parts of what i love about these guys. Fuck. For its understated feel ....

Nonsense to the aggressiveness, I've seen more aggression on the my little pony message board......I mean I was told.

Re: 70s Cup Round 1 Match 15
A is one of those tracks that I was hoping to hear in this cup, something acclaimed, well out of my comfort zone, that might lead me down an inroad to an unfamiliar genre. It's just not me though, perhaps I should accept that. I can appreciate the craft, and the quality of Mayfield's voice, but I just don't like my music this embellished, it doesn't move me in any way. Perhaps I should just lock myself into a lightened room for a few days and listen to nothing else.
B, you see, does more for me. It doesn't have the strings and brass smoothing out the overall sound, but it's got just as much thought into it's overall construction, even a non-prime (though certainly not near his low) cut from Don is far removed from a standard blues boogie. The way the riffing happens over there *points to the right*, the drums are over there *points to the left*, all doing their own thing, but somehow stitched together as a coherent whole. It's lovely, isn't it?

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Neither is my bag. A is too smooth; B is a touch scary.

Re: 70s Cup Round 1 Match 15
This is a tough one. Curtis is long established as part of my collection while I made the mistake of trying Trout Mask Replica first, which put me off Beefheart for a long while. I still don't like that record but I have grown to enjoy much of his other work, Clear Spot perhaps most of all.
And yet this one isn't one of my favourites on that album. And this is a song which, while not the finest Curtis did, still has enough to enchant and move me. The production is just the right side of smooth, the arrangement just the right side of cluttered, the groove is comfortable and the lyric and vocal seal the deal.
Two fine picks, but it's A.

To my ears, the mighty Captain towers miles over Mayfield's falsetto musings.

nobody sings as purdy as Curtis but I'm going B by virtue of that long, lunar note.

That’s a fantastic Curtis pick and one that I wasn’t familiar with - absolutely prime period stuff and, as a result, clearly magnificent. I’ll be downloading this LP before bed! And as seems to happen in this Cup, we’ve got an absolute belter from the Captain against it - again, peak stuff for me. That lunar note indeed. Really tough not to vote for both but...

I love Curtis but this pick is just alright. It's not a Don tune I would have picked but there's a lot of really curious and interesting touches to it that make me a lot more engaged with it, and it does go to a fairly evocative and resonant end too. So B.

Re: 70s Cup Round 1 Match 15
a - you can pretty much copy and past what I said in the last round - in fact, I'll do it for you: "Curtis Mayfield lit up the 1960s like a harmonic beacon. Then he ditched the Impressions, fell in love with his effects pedals and turned to shit – relatively speaking, of course, he still had a gorgeous voice, just employed it on dreary, often overlong songs/jams in a genre I could never stand." At least this one has got sweet strings rather than that FUCKING HORRIBLE guitar, but his high tenor really needs to be underpinned by vocal harmonies, and he should have got back to writing three minute songs, his great strength. Couldn't get through this. 4.5 / 10
b - I was a big fan of the Magic Band from the start, but found this album less appealing than any before it (although not as horrid as the two on Virgin). That said, this was one of the better tracks, with some decent guitar racket and some great crooning from El Capitan, even if the lyric is a bit naff. 5 / 10
