I recall reading some disparaging remarks about the Timmy Thomas tune previously on BCB, so I'm surprised (and delighted) to see the support for it here.

Hmm, I was sure I had submitted my vote, but apparently not. In any case, without much enthusiasm

Linval is an odd choice when considering the 70's were the greatest period of Reggae. This is entirely unremarkable.

Re: 70s Cup Round 1 Match 14
I've never got into reggae in any way at all, which always irks me somewhat, because I absolutely love the vibrancy and joyfulness of the ska which preceded it. I mean, I don't want to sound like a middle-aged white man with no connection to Jamaican culture or urban life.... but I just did, and I just am, and this means nothing to me, Oh, Vienna. Another song that ends rather abruptly, but not a second too soon.
I can't decide if Timmy Thomas sounds like he should be a schoolmate of Billy Bunter, or the star of an Ealing comedy. It's a very sparse, stripped back thing, almost like the kind of experimental electronic thing I'd have bought it if didn't have a soul vocal over the top. Odd, distinctive, not entirely successful, but yeah, it's the winner here.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

What’s so good about A? I don’t see it. Oh shut up.
B is a fantastic track but it’s getting to be a cup recidivist – that must be three or four times I’ve seen it picked. I still love it though – Sade’s version too – and A poses no competition so

I first heard B when Sade covered it and I loved her version long before I ever heard the original which turned out to be even better.
I wasn't keen on A

A is fun and perfectly pleasant, but on just about every metric i can think of (except "reggae-ness" obviously), B wins here.

Re: 70s Cup Round 1 Match 14
A is pleasant enough but seems pretty generic. Legalise it! Anyway, all fairly moot as despite B now venturing into Cup stalwart territory, it remains a magnificently singular and spartan blend of rickety, primitive electronics, stabbing keys and that wonderful vocal and song over the top. It’s a copper bottomed classic.

A is good (pity it gets cut off before the end)... but B is simply great!

Musically I don't exactly mind A even if it's pretty generic, as others have said, but marihuana culture's utter bastardization where I live at at least have done the tracks utterly naff lyrics no favours - I couldn't roll my eyes harder at it. Absolutely dig B however, very spacious and there's something about the cold mechanical feel of the drum machine paired with the soulful delivery elsewhere that gets to me.

A - not much there prefer other reggae. Its okay
B- after getting over the drum machine I thought the second half of the song was much more interesting. Part of the reason I prefer longer tracks because maybe the song actually gets good. Not the case here as its just an okay song.

Re: 70s Cup Round 1 Match 14
I feel like I've seen B too often in these cups, but it's still a monumental production, and A is pretty boring and cliche. I mean, I love the Willie Nelson just as much as the next man (probably more), but I'd probably pick Dark Side of the Fucking Moon over that were I "under the influence."

I'd be interested to see how many times Timmy Thomas appeared in BCB-cups. I feel it must have been a dozen or so...
Nothing wrong with it, it sucks the ganja out of A with ease....

a - I don't understand Reggae, have no frame of reference for it. While I have no problem with the sentiments, their simple repetition over a donkey-plod backbeat didn't engage me at all. Um, 4 / 10
b - I've heard this before in cups, like everyone else. It's a pleasingly retro arrangement and style for 1970s R&B, without any of the contemporary cliches (although I could do without the big bongoes or whatever those hand drums are called), and he's got a fine soulful voice. The organ sound appeals, too. Pity it's not a better song – just doesn't go anywhere, much like its opponenet, but it easily wins this tie. 5.5 / 10
