Well, congratulations to A for putting some of the worst lyrics known to man right up front. You've got to have some balls to croon something that banal in that Barry White meets Barry Manilow way. It's such a flaccid attempt at conjuring romance, it's like he's got a distant recollection of what a soulful love song is, hired someone to do the mawkish strings and cheesy cymbal clashes and HOLY FUCK those lyrics are bad. "Is it strong like the mountains, or deep like a fountain". "Is it blue like the sky, and does it really reach that high". Spectacular. Might be the worst thing I've heard since That World of Twist song in the last cup.
B is presumably some kind of lost classic that isn't classic, and remains quite lost. I think this would have lost any other tie, it's that kind of average singer-songwriter that reeks of the era, and not in a good way. But it just didn't have to do anything against Baldrick's poetic rival.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

What colour is your dentist office, because that is where I could imagine A being played...Or an elevator...
In the battle of banal lyrics, B gets the vote by a slight margin...

The Terry Callier track may teeter on the edge of jazzy easy listening but it’s ultimately a winner, lush and dreamy. It’s unfortunate, then, to meet a personal favourite of mine, a circling daydream of a track which couldn’t be more redolent of the depressing 70s of the three day week, Pebble Mill At One and caramac bars if it tried. Even the name “Brian Protheroe” has a provincial, un-rock pensiveness about it. Love it.

What with the Al Kooper track in the last round and now A it feels like we’ve temporarily hit the Sargasso Sea of the 70s cup when things get a little less hectic and we have time to take stock after Storm Noddy. B is ultimately a bit disappointing and fails to put up a credible challenge to the Terry Callier track, which is excellent of course.

A is an interesting TC choice, likely down to being someone's personal fave, but still lovely. B is nice but not really nice enough.

I do like that Terry Callier album a lot though the title track is not one of the standouts, a tad too easy listening for my tastes but it just about gets away with it and falls just on the right side of schmaltzy.
I have to go with B though as I adore it with its images of grimy bed-sits and a world-weary post-Beatles split mood.

I nearly went with A in my selection, it's an utterly stellar track (might have probably gone with "Just as Long as We Are in Love" instead though). B's new to me but didn't leave much of an impression.

A - nice arrangement and vocals but I find it bland. Just nothing interesting and what is with the cheesy harp swipes and why add a string section to this? You sure punk did rebel against this?
B- better lyrics and catchy tone. its not a great track but easily wins here.

nice strings on A.
B has that weird, hard to put your finger on "sound" that says "seventies" in flashing lights.
I guess that's the spirit I've decided to have in approaching the 70's cup.

Both great - wish they weren't up against each other. But Callier's a giant in my world, so I can't not vote for A.

Can't believe it- I really love the Terry Callier -album, it is such a great night album and it has been a joy every time... But I have to give it up for B, something new to my ears that sounded fabbo on this sun-drenched Spring afternoon....

a - Oh for fuck sake, a black John Martyn. You're recording, you could at least get out of bed. I quite like the sweet Philly tinges to the string arrangement, but the words are truly pitiable, fine for a simple teenage pop song, but for something with pretensions to adulthood and maturity - well, I wish he had mumbled more. As the song progresses, he briefly reveals a sweet set of pipes (if I may channel the stylings of certain doyens), and then it just fades away into a puddle of inconsequentiality. 4.5 / 10
b - The Chrysalis label was a bit of a warning sign to me as a young man, the home of all kinds of nonsense. Ooh, he name-checks Soho: edgy. Oh, it's a would-be builder, although I'm not sure what the farts add to the overall sound. And now it forgets about going fro a crescendo in favour of a cool sax break. Gawd save us. No, this won't do at all 3 / 10
A is least objectionable

I guess I have to be in the mood for some things, and I am most certainly in no mood for Terry Callier's ponderous bullshit in A. B was a new one, and it was great.
