This is more like it - a match with a bit of class and bite.
The Costello choice is a little populist and somewhat safe.
The Ultravox! choice is fine one. Foxx rules!

Loved early Ultravox, a weird mix of art/prog with punky leanings. Not my favourite Foxx-era track, but still deeply fine. This is Costello at his poppiest with a blatant (and admitted) Abba lift in the intro. Normally that would be enough to win, but not here.

B is less mannered, more of a song

B, although I love Foxx era Ultravox!
I’ve just loved it B most of my life.

Oliver's Army is certainly more listenable. I played the Ultravox tune through to the end, but I don't think I'd like to do that again.

Today I'm opting for Costello, one of his best songs which brings back a lot memories of the time when it was a hit.

B is one of the finest singles of its time and it would be silly to vote against it here (I can't be arsed with Ultravox at the best of times)

Considering my own list I've decided for this Cup that, whilst I will value discoveries, I'm not going to punish overfamiliarity. And Oliver's Army is a fuckin great song. A is fine but it's got to be

Personally, I woulda picked a handful of other John Foxx era Ultravox songs before this. It's good but doesn't beat. . .

It's a decent Ultravox song but B is fantastic. It reminds me of a lot of road trips with my parents so it's nostalgic but it's also just a great tune.

B's a stone-cold classic and I won't argue against it, but I'm really digging A's sound and it needs some more love on this matchup. Excellent stuff.

Re: 70s Cup Round 1 Match 4
I've always liked a couple of Ultravox songs like 'Hiroshima Mon Amour' (and, dare I say it, 'Vienna'), but I've more recently got into some of their other early work. Unfortunately, this isn't one of the songs I've recently got into. It's a bit cack-handed; sounds like something Magazine might have done before finding their stride.
I'm not a big Costello fan but B is one of his handful of undeniable corkers.
