A. I’m partial to a Dulli joint most days. Obviously Buckley is an abomination to these ears.

Whigs did much better, but B.

Some nice playing on A (I like that eastern tinged guitar and the drumming) but it was a bit of a miserable dirge as well. B was complete rubbish - it wanted to be heroin and S & M , but was really Horlicks and Marks & Spencers.

The first couple of minutes of A sound like Radiohead. Or do Radiohead sound like a couple of minutes of Jeff Buckley? A really uninteresting chicken/egg dilemma there. It's ok, I guess, I don't like the stop-start bit in the middle, it's complete filler with no purpose. Actually, I don't like anything of this, but the Radiohead-y bits which bookend the track.

Similarly, the start of B is acceptable enough, it has a bit of a sultry groove to it, and even the pianny plonking is ok. But the chorus is proper generic-indie-hoping-to-be-a-car-advert. It feels like more of a coherent song than A though, just about.

B
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Nonsense to the aggressiveness, I've seen more aggression on the my little pony message board......I mean I was told.

I was wondering if Jeff Buckley would make an appearance in the cup. A because I didn't much care for B.

a - here's another famous hit album I never listened to, although I've heard the odd track from JB before. It's hard not to mention his dad: even though JB didn't know him, he's inherited more than a penchant for accidentally killing yourself by being stupid. Unfortunately he's not quite as exquisitely gifted as a singer or songwriter than Tim, so all the comparisons tend to be in Dad's favour. This is dirgy and has a gimmicky feel that I don't enjoy. Just OK. 4 / 10
b - this is a band that also promised more than they delivered, for me. The chorus, as already noted, is dull, but the bits between, with the plinked joanna bringing a welcome new texture, just about pull it over the line. 4.5 / 10

D’oh! The utter dreariness dulled my senses and the ability to distinguish the A from the B key. I’m so glad this utter trial is over

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

I loved the Jeff Buckley record when I was an impressionable youth but as an adult I grew out of it, recognising its flaws. And this was never one of my favourite songs.
Still, there's enough to admire about the playing and enough evidence of his sad promise to beat B, which is just one of those indie things that got some press in the NME but nobody ever actually cared about, all half-baked attitude and infantile riffs.

I can’t deny I really liked Grace at the time although it’s flaws are now fairly glaring. In parts, though, it retains some power and this is one of its highlights. Afghan Whigs are a funny lot, always trying to project themselves as the second coming of Smokey and the Miracles while being a fairly typical grunge era rock band. It’s fine.
