I also suggested this one, but would prefer weird records, so we could include non-musical tracks, as well as mathch-ups between Yma Sumac and Hasil Adkins. It's still one of only two posited so far that I could imagine joining in, rather than just sniping from the sidelines. I'd also like a pre-Beatles singles cup, everything released before Love Me Do in October 1962. Perhaps a time limit of say, four minutes: this would stop it being too jazz-heavy, but there's blues, R&B, R&R, jump, western swing, deep country, be-bop, doo-wop, Dixieland (for those that like that sort of thing) and some godamn fine pop music and death records that qualify. Although it would probably be just me and my aliases in a four-way death match.

Looks like I'm being contrary again, but I'm enjoying the final much more than I did the rounds, which were a chore at times.

What a bunch of sour cunts.

So, one thing I noticed in this cup more than any previous is that there seems to be a lot of referencing of other poster's views. So does everyone read what others have written before listening to the tracks? If not, do you read it at all, or just vote and fuck those other guys?

Bit of both really. I often read the other votes while listening, but it's frequently in bafflement at people's lapses in judgement.

I read what everyone writes, it's part of the fun of the thing, all that bile and self-appointed tastemaker attitude. I give an honest assessment of each song, with an occasional drive-by bit of passive-aggressive taunting.

Well, i like reading the comments as i listen to the tracks, quite a few of them usually. Half the fun in these Cups is the comments, thoughts, put downs, trash talk etc that goes on while it's happening. And i might learn a thing or two i didn't know which i appreciate. Won't change my mind about how i'll vote usually, but it's always nice to pick up something new.

To be honest though, i didn't find the quality of music as good as some of the banter. :)

I blame D_F. If he'd just picked 'Midnight at the Oasis' or 'A Dream's a Dream' for the finals like he knew he should have, none of this would have happened.

Well, I enjoyed this Cup, at least until the vortex of Match 13, at least. The thing that makes the Cups even when - especially when -the music selected is largely, er, “not to ones tastes”, are the comments, the put downs, the preamble, the circumlocution, the exclamations of great joy and the occasional low blows. The annals of Bitter Recriminations are full of bile, some tongue in check, some “4 Real”, others it’s hard to say. Mostly, though, this long into it, I think people just enjoy talking about music in a different way that YY is finding hard to satisfy now. For me, it’s fun either way - hearing stuff you enjoy or that’s new that you dig - or guffawing when it’s stuff you don’t get. I’m kind of inured to most of the barbs - even when some of the digs are painfully accurate! - but get it’s not the same for everyone. No offence intended, folks! Anyway, I think n/e did a stand up job here and hopefully the next Cup will see all combatants return refreshed and ready for battle...

I hope it's not too long. This 90s Cup has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Is that because you found it so hard to pin down exactly when the '90's were? :)

And Maarts has done a bang up job indeed. Cheers.

I second (third? fourth?) the praise for Maarts' work, great job with this! Sorry to have spoiled the mood.

I've enjoyed this tournament even if the music has largely not been to my taste and I ultimately came to the conclusion that the 90's was not my decade for music. I didn't have the balls to muster up my own list of tunes and take part but if I had I'm pretty sure it would have been shot down in flames :D

I found it disappointing overall, becuz of the selections. I was looking fwd to hearing something new and intriguing. Didn't happen.
