Both right up my alley
Have both and really like both.
But hadn't listened to B for a long time and it really made me smile.

I like a few things from Mercury Rev but that left me a bit cold.
The Throwing Muses though... I've never heard it before... and I really enjoyed it. The strange changes and shifts and weird vocal stylings (and those completely over the top tom fills) were excellent. A

The TM track is very middling indie, all a bit predictable and unimaginative. Instrumentally it felt like it was going through the motions.
There's something a little too sweet and precious about Mercury Rev ( at least in their Deserters Songs phase) for me to really enjoy them, but there's a musical breadth here quite lacking from A.

B doesn't sound good to me at all.
A is monotonous, but I'll still take it over B.

A is basically the Pixies with a better singer.
B would soon be to the 00's what most of this crap has been to the 90s, but in this context it's downright refreshing (but only a smidgeon).

A wasn't bad, listenable indie with a few imaginative touches, but it never lifts off.
B is from one of my favourite albums of the decade, though, and though it's not my favourite track it's full of woozy, evocative sounds and melodies.

Re: 90s Cup Final Round Match 9
There's a decent track being buried by the wannabe derivativeness of Throwing muses here. It's like they want to show they have some imagination and ideas, but also don't want to stray too far from the safe and dull middle-ground. Voice of the Beehive spooning Frank Black. A decent burst of fun, but a bit too generic.
Hmm. Nah, I'm not convinced by Mercury Rev here. It almost had me, but those Beatles-y ELO-y overtones aren't my cup of tea, and the string arrangements are perfunctory "make this sound grander than it is" elements. I mean, for this kind of thing it's more inventive than yer Blur type of grave-robbing, but again there seems to be more coming from the production team than from the band
Here we've got one act coming up with a few ideas and hiding it with generic production values, and another act coming up with little and throwing the production kitchen sink at it. A is just more fun.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I miss Kristin Hersh. What a singular talent, she most definitely is one of these most interesting writers out there. The Muses really were best in their more schizophrenic moments, this one is perhaps a bit more mundane.
Rev gets the vote because I have a great memory of hearing them play this live at the Enmore and really getting the crowd on their side.

Re: 90s Cup Final Round Match 9
I like both of these, with the reservations that were brought earlier by the other posters. I'm thinking A here right now for the "Sat In Your Lap" drum sections, but it's the kind of track that would benefit from having a singer who could evoke even half the emotion Frank could.
