A didn't do anything for me. I kept waiting for something to happen to give it some individuality and it never did, it just sounds like a million other things, I'd be genuinely curious in what the picker saw in it. Formula hip-hop.

B isn't to my taste. It's just too overblown for me, but it's a lot more memorable than A.

A very begrudging B

Don't mind A but B is one of my favourite tracks of the 90s.

It smashes it; fantastic lyrics and vocals, monumental walls of guitar.

What's not to like?

The Hole track is just about the only thing of theirs I really have any time for. And that's not very much, to be hnest.

But A registers absolute zero with me - uninspiring and leaden.

Musically, A doesn't seem particularly distinctive, but it's a decent enough track for this kinda thing. I'm not going to embarrass myself and start talking about flow n' dat shizzle, but the guy knows how to spit out the words, the rhythm on the "I flows, so one of my shows, wouldn't be clever to miss. I'm leavin' competitors pissed. To tell you the truth, it gets no better than this" makes the track on its own.

B is a horrible plastic over-produced slice of MTV fake rebellion and anger. It has the feel and authenticity of a Pepsi Max advert. Just more saccharine. Wretched.

Generally I either stray wildly from Darkness_Fish's views or agree totally. In this instance it's the latter.

have to give a pass on this one... A is generic and B is Hole and a plastic version at that...

I'm with Darkness Fish and Hatz, probably the only time this particular trio will ever be united.
Big L is just a gangsta brag track but it's executed with such finesse and purity. The guy can rap.
B is pretty ghastly.

I like Hole and this is a great song from a very good album.

Big L was one of the finest freestyle rappers that ever lived (he died at 24 or 25 from a drive by) and this song fuses early hip hop braggadocio and '90s production really well. It has some echoes of Naughty by Nature at the start but stakes its own ground as it goes on. He was an early partner of Mase, who P Diddy took on. It's really a good example of '90s era hip hop - great beat, some nice samples and sound affects mixed in and good call outs, reminiscent of what Sen Dog does for Cypress Hill.

A is not bad but doesn't reel me in like Wu-Tang did earlier.
Even though I dislike Courtney Love massively (as Greg Giraldo one famously called her an 'anal wart'), this song has a good hook....another one for the pool-jukebox.
