I like, and have, quite a bit of Bjork - sometimes she's a sensational artist. But not here I'm afraid.

A is one of those magical tunes that just gets better... even 20+ years on. Just a stunningly beautiful, heartbreaking song.

oooh, difficult choice, both pretty good and are iconic 90s styles.

Difficult - best Portishead pick we've had up against a singer I invariably enjoy.

Because I prefer one album to the other, and because I think it will struggle for votes:

One of Björk's weaker early efforts is still decent but A takes it easily, being Portishead's greatest song.

I've always loved 'Roads', a really powerful update on the torch song. It achieves a genuine emotive power.
I quite like B too, it's a really epic arrangement, but Bjorks vocals are still a bit clunky and ugly for me. It would certainly have been good enough to win most ties, but not this one.

Oh lord. Back to "so not my 90s."

I guess A is slightly less objectionable. Nothing wrong with the singing, at least.

One of the joys of being so far from the mainstream, or so far removed from reality in the 90s, is that songs which are probably quite obvious to some are completely new to me. One such song being this rather lovely Portishead track. Everything that Sneaker Pimps didn't provide last round with their cheap pastiche. So much craft, guile, and emotion, it's a lovely thing indeed.

And that Bjork track is also a thing of beauty, albeit one that even I was aware of back then. She's better at the big pop stompers than she is at the more experimental stuff, and that distinctive phrasing and quirkily soaring voice raises this well above the pack.

It's tough, and I can't decide right now. I might give 'em both a listen again. Great tie, best one of the comp.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I much prefer my Portishead pick in Round 2, but hey.

Not one of my fave Bjork cuts, but it will do here.

I really like both of these though I'm only familiar with the Bjork track never having heard the Portishead album.

A strong opening to the final round but I'll give A the vote for bringing it to my attention that I probably should listen to Dummy in its entirety at some point.

A is Portishead's finest moment: a gorgeous song with a subtle, delicate production.
B, though, is from the time when Björk was still warbling aimlessly and tunelessly, not having figured out how to harness the voice to the increasingly interesting and intricate music she was making.

I've always had mixed feelings about Bjork and B, but not about this particular Portishead song. It's a gem.

It’s one of the best ties we’ve had! Check out, ooh, match 12 in this round.

Anyway, I really like - if not absolutely love - both. This is Portishead at their most torchy before they got all worried about being seen as a coffee table broadsheet type of band. Lovely. But I’m going for Bjork and one her early “proper” solo tracks, where her previously ur-indie credentials were taken down the night club and give some hitherto unexpected commercial oomph by Nellee Hooper. It’s more than accepted now but it was a startling reinvention.
