Re: 90s Cup Round 8 Match 5
Hmm. It's disappointing hearing Jello Biafra singing over such a generic punky track, even if he gives everything vocally, there's just not much of a track here to judge. Hardly seems to be biting satire, either. Some Lard would've gone down much better than this with me. This just sounds like a recreation of DK after they'd gone a bit shit.
And Sneaker Pimps sound like a late hitchhiker on the trip-hop bandwagon. Everything sounds too smooth, too crisp, there's none of the smoky somnabulant atmosphere of the good stuff. What that horrible farty bass-synth is about, I don't know.
I can't decide what's worse, a tired aimless punk record, or a crappy late attempt at a commercial jump onto a passing bandwagon. Again, I may revisit.
*Ok, I've decided what's worse. Giving either a vote would be a crime. And B isn't coffee-table, it's plastic garden table, cheap mass-produced shit.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

A was like a punked up Cramps doing the Batman theme. It was fine as these things go, but I tired of it fairly quickly.
B has the kind of sleazy lounge feel, all narcoleptic beats and bedroom eyes vocals, that the 90s did rather well and which BCB apparently hates (expect lots of comments referencing coffee tables). Nice pick.

I like NoMeansNo. Can't deal with the cutesy vocal in B.
A please.

Surprised that A is by NoMeansNo and Jello Biafra of all pairings - for two of the most creative acts in hardcore, this sounds anything but. In fact there's a strangely sterile sound to it, like it was entirely composed out of sound banks on Ableton or something. I was hoping for something rawer and more angular, knowing the output of the two. B I quite like, might be a bit of a safe pick but only slightly. It's the kind of stuff I think Lamb does better though.

A wasn't very good. Just a pretty poor record in every sense.
I never liked B at the time but it's held up OK with some nice touches in the production, though the overall effect is still an uncomfortable bandwagon-hopping mix of trip-hop and Britpop.
B I suppose as I listened to the whole thing.

Re: 90s Cup Round 8 Match 5
Biafra is the guy that I should respect but his rambles don't always hit the point. This collab hits the short/sharp/shocked,-mode quite easily enough. The Pimps create nice aural wallpaper that benefits from that little vocal hook but not much else...

The vocals in B reminded me of Faith No More. I liked it more than A

There's another version of 6 Underground that I prefer, where it's not quite so lounge lizardy.
Funnily enough, a colleague mentioned NoMeansNo to me only this week.
Dunno.
I guess A

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

No need for stuff like A in the 90s, but it is fucking ace isn't it. And Jello always sounds great.
Love B as well why did they ask Dayton to leave, she made them?
A because B sacked Kelli Dayton the bastards.

Re: 90s Cup Round 8 Match 5
A is pretty poor, do I hear the riff from Too Drunk To Fuck being recycled in there? Whereas, the ace John Barry sampling 6 Underground remains one of the 90s great one off hit singles, even better in its (presumably) remixed incarnation. Love it.
