B is, quite simply, one of the great moments of the decade. A isn't.

Hmm...Franti updating Biafra or Cocker preening like an...um...cock?
A wins me over despite being a bit unsubtle. B doesn't overcome being Pulp.

The beats aren't bad in A, but otherwise it's difficult to know what the point of this is.
I think Pulp's musical limitations have become more apparent over time. In some ways they're like The Smiths without the musicality. That said, the chorus has enough bite and pizzazz to win this quite easily.

Re: 90s Cup Round 7 Match 1
Is A on the Virus 100 compilation? I've certainly got a different version by the same band. I like the intent, but it just doesn't sound to me like it's that successful. The vocals are very Chuck D ish, but sluggish. The funky aspects just aren't funky enough, and the chunky beats just aren't chunky enough. Seems like there's something missing.
B is Pulp's other great song, the only thing I've heard that compares to "Common People". Which I thought would've put in an appearance by now. It reminds me of The Tindersticks in a way, the languid retrograde pop thing, with a mannered vocal performance. I have to admit, this tie was never in doubt when I saw that this. It's got mood, elegance, swing, and one of Jarvis's greatest vocals.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I wouldn't seek either out (altho I do like the beats in A).

A is quite good fun but wholly unnecessary, surely Television.... would have been a better pick
B is a classic

A is OK but from a decade that produced so much great hip-hop, it's a pretty underwhelming bit of sub-PE bashing.
B has the magic recipe.

Re: 90s Cup Round 7 Match 1
I liked that Disposables record at the time but it’s aged pretty badly - particularly this rather tired sounding retread. Against it is a genuinely ace pop moment from the decade; like Common People, it’s probably a little burned out for me and I’ll therefore seek my Pulp thrills elsewhere, but there’s no denying it trounces the opposition here. Easy

I fucking hate Michael Franti. B would've probably won no matter what the song was but I still needed to get out the disgust I feel for Franti's output.
