B is certainly dramatic. And I know that that record inspires very strong opinions. Mine is just - yeah, pretty good. Never felt the need to own it or play it, but when I do hear it I enjoy it. Ah, faint praise!

A is harder-edged than they look. Fairly ordinary production comparatively, but nicely done, and the rapping is solid. Even "average" stuff from the decade sounds pretty good.

There was a lot of humourless, studiedly emotional, introvertedly arty rock around in the '90s and Slint were to blame for a lot of it. But they did it far, far better than anyone else, with beauty, power and restraint.
A is lively but generic and forgettable.

A comes from a period when hip hop could still be light, party music before all that was blown away by the likes of The Wu-Tang Clan. As such it comes across as a slight relic today, but it had enough pep for me to enjoy it even if it was slightly generic. B was just too morose for me. I guess there's a place for music which explores something darker and more troubling, but it has to be done with far more power than that to interest me.

How did A ever sell any copies with that cover? It's certainly on the lighter side, though not as wretched as the likes of Will Smith and Tupac. That little jazz break after 2 minutes is a fucking great touch, too. Yeah, I don't mind this too much, a bit De La Soul lite.

Spiderland is one of those albums I own, and bought with great expectations, and it just never clicked, it seems so dry and dull. I normally love this kind of thing, but there's something missing here. Emotion, perhaps, or any sense of dynamic, or a tune, or even a decent lack of tune.

I get that Slint are very influential and, among a certain cohort, very hip. However, it’s all too po-faced and chin stroky for me. Give me the simple pleasures of

Slint are the indie-bores dream band. Absolutely fuck all going on wrapped in a cloak of self-mythologising pretentiousness with a soupçon of whiney angst. Perfect! Twats.

In the last match, G pointed to Lush as emblematic of where the 90s went wrong. I understand what he's saying, but he's wrong. Slint is responsible for everything going wrong. I liked a lot of things that were close to this in some regards, and if the Slint record lived alone in a vacuum it would be cute, but it would still suck. But that's not what happened. Alas.
