Neil Young just feels so workmanlike to me when he does this sort of thing. It's like some sweaty repetitive work out.
There's definitely more for me in the Portishead track with Beth's siren like vocals and its noirish touches. That said, it feels like they're being slightly ill-served by the selections so far. It feels like people are avoiding their more accessible, tuneful side for fear of their selections being labelled obvious or "coffee table" (to be fair this probably would happen ) and going for them at their most willfully difficult instead.

Again, not one of Portishead's better moments: it sounds rather forced, although it has some nocturnal moodiness.
But it's up against Neil Young on autopilot. It literally sounds like something he wrote while twiddling his guitar while waiting for a meeting with his accountant or something. And it's one of his worst vocals.
So I'll give it to A.

I love both of these artists. I cannot for the life of think why people would hoose these two tunes by them tough. Truly bizarre.
The portishead just sounds painful - and not in a good artistic fashion. Just really strained and regettable.
Has to be B but...really....

Like a lot of Portishead I've heard, there's interesting elements happening in A, but the parts don't fit together comfortably. I don't care how good the cooks are, if they don't organize the kitchen logically, they're going to end up making slop. By comparison B is diner food- a bit greasy, and maybe not made of top quality ingredients, but dependable and unpretentious. Plus it comes from an album I loved. A revival of Crazy Horse just flat out rocking, with no agenda otherwise, fresh on the heels of the constant genre-jumping he was doing in the 80s. Something to be said for that. It was certainly very refreshing at the time.

Re: 90s Cup Round 3 Match 10
Uh, this isn't a very good example of Portishead being Portishead. What's wrong with Beth's voice here, she sounds like someone stretching a cat. It's quite dull and wishy-washy overall, feels like a proper album filler.
Is Neil Young the next in the Motorhead-Hawkwind continuum of people who should have stopped in the 70s? There's a nice fuzziness to the guitar, but the drumming is really beyond mundane again. And I was tempted to vote for this, until the chorus started, and you get that horrible working-mens' club sing-song thing going on. If it just had the guitar, without drums or vocals, this could've been ok.
A. But don't take that as approval.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I wish Portishead recorded a song called "I'll Get You, My Pretty"

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
