The Brian Jonestown Massacre are basically the USA’s answer to Ocean Colour Scene, except less catchy.
Swervedriver are OK but they have a crap singer.
B I guess.

The BJM approach to retro rock was far more fun than many of their peers ( Primal Scream or The Black Crowes say). This has some great riffing but is let down by nondescript vocals. However everything about B was nondescript.

Nonsense to the aggressiveness, I've seen more aggression on the my little pony message board......I mean I was told.

Fairly evenly matched for me, but the riff wins it.

I like the fairly shambolic nature of track A, and I hope that the awful "whooo" noises are in some way a nod to US Maple's Al Johnson. It's just unfortunate that it's so backwards looking, I really never saw the point in doing stuff like this. It sounds like they could have had some charm, if they'd just not been so classic rockist.
Swervedriver are more fixedly of their time, and are also clearly not trying to make anything interesting happen, lest they annoy a passing Melody Maker hack. This is such a let down after the first two ties in this round. I'm struggling to find anything to say about this at all, it's a cheap aural muesli.
A, begrudgingly.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Style over substance in both cases. B is also way too long, for bad measure. But it also has more style and more substance. BJM has always seemed like the Emporer's New Clothes to me. Act like rock stars and people will think you are, I guess. There's nothing special about what they do beyond that.

A sounds like a very poor Primal Scream track.
B sounds like a very poor primetime Oasis track, so just shades it.

B's twice its necessary length at least but I feel there was more going on in it than in A, which just irritated me.

A. Far and away A.
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Re: 90s Cup Round 3 Match 3
Two bands I at least heard of, although I can't say what they might sound like
a - more vaguely mid-tempo grungy shit. Ah fuck, this is horrible - not the fault of this particular track, but I've really heard enough smacked-out* grinding pastiches of rock music in this cup to last me the rest of my life, and there's six more rounds to go. The guitar was all right, I thought, and boost the marks up, but basically that was a chore to listen to. 3.5 / 10
b - That's better. Sounds like they're awake. The vocalist is nothing to write home about, I agree, but he fucks off soon enough, there's a fine train riff (a mover, too, not a shunter in Swindon loco sheds), some pleasant and comfortable noises from the instruments, and a proper pulse. It's alive!
Sure it was long, but at least they were mindlessly jamming around a riff that was worth it rather than showing off their edginess or prog aspirations. One of very few tracks in this cup so far I would consider listening to again, all six-odd minutes of it. Thanks, B.
6 /10
B
*nb not suggesting that they are/were junkies, it's just a form I associate with those on the nod (legal dept)

So that’s what BJM sound like - amateurish bobbins. Swervedriver were also a band that I never bothered with at the time - this doesn’t exactly make me think I missed out but has far more about it than A.
