Re: 90s Cup Round 3 Match 1
The only real argument with A is that it seems a bit too obvious a pick, being perhaps the best-known track from one of the best-known and most acclaimed hip-hop records of the decade.
But I found B a bit annoying with very bland rhyming, despite the ”exclusive Blue Note samples” gimmick.

Re: 90s Cup Round 3 Match 1
It's funny how things that seem quite complimentary are being drawn together; to whit two tracks that mine jazz to bring it into the 90s produced by hip hop/ DJ crews. Mind you can say the similarities end there as one track is by one of the most innovative and critically lauded acts in hip hop history and is from a truly classic album, whilst the other is a track produced by a bunch of London chancers cynically rifling through the Blue Note catalogue to make something brazenly commercial.
For that reason I expect a stream of votes to go to A, so perversely I'll give B a bit of support. It's great fun and I've always enjoyed hearing it, but A is a great track and I'll feel very dirty if it loses!

Predictable pick though it may be, A was by no means overplayed in my world, and B was. As G says, B was a lot of fun in the moment. But A is a landmark, and one I must confess I'm unfamiliar with.

Re: 90s Cup Round 3 Match 1
Yeah, A Tribe Called Quest wasn't my 90s, they quite obviously passed me by. Might well be the first time I've heard this track, but I'm a sucker for hip-hop with double-bass, and I like the sample of Umar Bin Hassan ranting that briefly appears there. It's quite lovely, innit.
"Cantaloop" is much more omnipresent, and while it's not a poor record, moddie described it perfectly, a bunch of chancers piecing something together trying to try and catch the mood of the time. Which turns out to be quite a good thing, quite often. It's just the wrong side of gimmicky for me.
Good tie. A is the class act, however.

A is okay but nothing that many others havent done equally well....
B just about edges it but I must confess if I never heard either again, my sun would still rise in the morning... ooh err.

B easily, probably because I heard it on the radio when it came out, so its had a 2 decade head start.

I enjoyed the nods to jazz in both tracks but A makes something new and worthwhile with them while B just makes me want to play Herbie Hancock.

Fantastic match. This stuff was a huge part of MY '90s.
A is the one i'd play more, but i have a huge soft spot for B.
A draw for now, though i may come back.

Re: 90s Cup Round 3 Match 1
I'm prety much with PENK on A and Trans on B. A's a great track but offers nothing new as a choice and is every bit as obvious as the Nirvana last round... But B's appeal is really all about "Cantaloupe Island" and I don't see why I wouldn't listen to that instead, without all the outdated 90s clicques smeared over it. An unenthusiastic A for the sake of not abstaining, I suppose.

a - if I heard this before, I've forgotten. Like the double bass and the voice (leaving aside issues of comprehensibility), but otherwise on one listen, left me a bit cold. 4.5 / 10
b - Never heard this before, didn't recognize any of the samples, but thought they were nicely placed didn't mind the rap at all - in fact, quite enjoyed it, as I felt it set out to entertain. 5.5 / 10

Re: 90s Cup Round 3 Match 1
B is a fun, if opportunistic, pop jump on a bandwagon started a couple of years earlier by A as they redefined jazz inflected rap on their still vital sounding second album. It’s a real shame as I’d take B over loads of the wilfully obscure junk in this Cup but A is the real deal.
