Ugh. Coin-flip says B but both are insufferable.

Fuck I truly despise that James track (in fact, I hate everything James have ever done, I think).
So B by default.

Shame it took till the last match in the 2nd round to like both songs pretty well. And I don't even like A all that much.
As for B, if you've been paying attention at all, you've already heard me prattle on about it. Suffice to say it's one of my favorite tracks on one of my favorite records ever, not just for the decade.

A is OK. Just OK. Nothing more or less, really.
B is more inventive and has good guitar work, but some tasteless production and that lame half-rapped vocal make for a pretty unpleasant listening experience.

Triage is a great, great album. James are a good band too. Difficult choice but I'll go for

The James track has the melodic sophistication of something written by a six year old. Very irritating.
B is a ragbag mix of 'moody' cliches which sounds like it was written to be the soundtrack of a scene where a cop busts some drug addicts in a US crime drama. Pretty dull.
I'll go B.

Re: 90s Cup Round 2 Match 12
At last a good match in an otherwise rather dreary round!
James is cute, but seems totally lightweight compared to Baerwald (whom I really like a lot, nice seeing him in this cup!)
B
Anyway, I'll miss the next few rounds as I'll be on holidays for two weeks.
Make sure that you vote for me while I'm away!!!

I actually like that James track, even though they are probably Britain's answer to Live.
A solid no thanks to Hip Hop David Baerwald. He's no Suzanne Vega. Sorry, hatz (or whomever inadvertently nominated a hatzrecord)

Re: 90s Cup Round 2 Match 12
Much like Suede, I really quite intensely dislike James, but I really quite like this track. It's so lightweight it's practically translucent. I think it's the pseudo-yodelling that does it, it's a neglected aspect of pop music. That fucking drum-fill though, I'd make a more pleasant sound snapping the stick-wielder's fingers one by one.
That's an awful portentous intro on the David Baerwald track. Sort of thing you'd expect Phil Collins to walk out onstage to before being a dreary cunt for two hours. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to improve much once it starts, it sounds like it was made for an urban-life montage on a really ropy American cop show. Sorry hatz, I tried to find what you find in this, but it's an overproduced mess to me.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I enjoyed the James track more than I remember but I found I liked B more as it went on and by the end it successfully wrestled my vote from A's clutches

Re: 90s Cup Round 2 Match 12
B is that kind of post hip hop, “edgy” but safe alt rock that briefly gained currency in the 90s, you can just imagine the A&R scramble. It’s all a bit off, really, and a distinctly ersatz experience all round. A bunch of London based chancers like Alabama 3 did the same thing with more conviction. I don’t share the anima aversion to James but they’ve always been a firmly second division outfit. This was their Brian Eno record but pointed more towards Coldplay than back to Bowie. Anyway, it’s done enough here.
