Abstain.

The Red House Painters never added up to much for me, but even though I dearly love Nirvana, I'm not voting for one of their lead singles.

I always wanted to like Red House Painters. I mean, that cover art is really quite lovely and evocative, and the name, it trips off the tongue and sounds vaguely clever. No idea if it does have any underlying meaning, but it sounds cool. Every time I hear something by 'em though, it just doesn't sound that distinctive, it's quite pleasant, but Kozelek doesn't sound like he has any connection to the underlying music, which sounds good sometimes in wild chaotic abandon, but not in pleasant indie alt-rock-country whatever.

Whereas Nirvana, I never really liked, but I got why they connected. Kurt sounded genuine, and the music here doesn't sound constructed by committee, unlike the PL Harvey track in the previous tie. There's variation, and they know when to push the right buttons.

It's close, and I kinda want to vote against Nirvana just for being an obvious behemoth. But it's the better track.

A reminded me The Lilac Time but unfortunately in one of their duller moments.

I like Mark Kozelek, he did a Modest Mouse covers album for Christ sake, he's one of my dudes, but it's fucking Nirvana. Of course I'm voting B

a - a snoozy, but basically harmless piece of Americana, with a vibe that reminded me vaguely of American Music Club. I kept expecting it to burst into flower, but it didn't really, just kind of sat there. Hm 4.5 / 10
b - my mate Howard was one of the three people who bought a copy of Bleach when it was released over here, and on the basis of that I formed a view of the band that wasn't exactly favourable. Then I got caught up in the general swirl around Teen Spirit and, to a slightly lesser extent, Nevermind. I was one of the first in the queue when In Utero came out, and I soon realized that I was right the first time. This is probably the best track on there, with its interwoven guitar and bass lines, but fuck me, that soft/loud Pixies gimmick got old really quickly, and Kocain's whiny junkie miserabilism shat all over any flickers of uplift. It isn't remotely fair to blame this lot for the wankers that followed them, but I don't really do fair, and, Jesus Dog, grunge was a load of disgusting shit, wasn't it? And this band gave us Grohl: groooh.
Over the decade or more we've been on the same forums, Algroth and I have agreed on almost nothing, but I'm with him here. Horrible malignancy of a band 2 / 10
