I always kinda liked Pram, and my own list would have had something like it. But ultimately, it occurs to me that I wasted a lot of time listening to this sort of thing in the 90s, when I would've voted for it over Suede straightaway. But now I don't think it's much of a contest.

Well, I can guess who submitted A, given that I promised I'd vote for any Pram tracks if he joined the comp. And he's campaigning for extra votes. Good job it's not a load of tuneless clattering, hey? Actually, this is nothing like what I expected, I've only got North Pole Radio Station, and nothing really stood out from that. This reminds me of the playfulness of Crescent or Movietone (and the same organ sound?) but at twice the pace and with a bit of a bubblegum joie de vivre. Best track that's new to me in the cup so far. In fact, I'm listening again to it straight away. Gorgeous stuff.

I must admit, I thought this would've been a closer tie, because although Suede had almost no discernible purpose to their existence, I always really liked Animal Nitrate. It's a proper pop song (despite the annoying guitar) with soaring vocals that sound genuinely euphoric on the chorus, and that kind of bona fide joy is hard to encounter in bog-standard NME-approved indie. I remember as a student me and my mates used to dance to this in rock city, with our t-shirts knotted to bare our wobbly midriffs in ironic celebration. Yeah. Cuntish. I told you 93/94 was bad for me.

A easily.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

A's ramshackle banging on pan lids and empty tins approach was interesting for a while but the disinterested vocal and complete lack of anything approaching a memorable melody worked against it.

Brett Anderson's voice is annoying but at least there's a song there.

I've never heard of Pram, but they seem to be in that elite group of lo-fi amateurish bands that actually make interesting sounding music.

I've never heard Suede before either. I imagine this was what every UK member of BCB was listening to around 1994? I actually liked it, but I'm going with A.

Some of the comments against Suede here are as mind-boggling as the comments against the joyous musical experiences I offer up to you cloth eared cretins

a - ooooh, up-tempo. Makes a change. Never heard (of) this band before, and was quite dreading it based on what has been said about them here, but I'm agreeably surprised - female vocals, weird instruments, interesting post punky noises, echoes of bands such as the Slits and the Raincoats, and a bit of lively. It was perhaps a little long – I could have done without the clattering coda – but I rather enjoyed that 6 / 10
b – I know is well, of course, bought the 12", along with everything else they put out. Although Anderson is an overly mannered vocalist to my ears, the noises the band made were always excellent (the fabulous records BB put out with David McAlmont, all soaring vocals, fine guitar fills and Spectorish production showed where the true talent in Suede lay); that said, this isn't one of their best. 5.5 / 10

Ray's voting for the weirdos again... A
