Re: 90s Cup Round 2 Match 3
I had issues with both videos, actually, I mean the original one for A and the one for B. I did find "Bomba" on Spotify though.
This is an interesting matchup of tracks where each has its own ethnic sound blended with some staple 90s electronic rhythms and the likes. And I do think the latter is the worst aspect of either, but still I overall enjoyed them quite a bit. I wasn't entirely certain who the first guy was but it makes sense that he's worked a fair bit with Emir Kusturica on his films (Underground particularly). It's a tough one actually, I would have voted for either in several other matches for certain, but I'm going with A by a hair, I guess.

I like the Wobble right enough.
I actually own A so that wins.

An easy, easy B. Even though it's far from my favorite Wobble, it's got some semblance of melody and structure. I'm having flashbacks to "left of the dial" listening again. That contestants seem oddly insistent on settling in there is Not a Good Thing.

ECM is often a mark of quality but they do sometimes stray into New Age pants and A here is a prime example (although I just realised it's not on ECM - the picture on the video made me think it was!). The crunchy beats just make it worse. From the Kusturica mention I was hoping for some of the brilliant Balkan brass from his films - maybe I should have picked 'Pitbull Terrier' for my list!
But then I played B and it was a similarly hapless mismatch of "world music" and badly dated electronics.

Usually, I would vote for something like A, but B is fitting my mood today.

Both are the kinds of inoffensively bland world music tracks you'd hear when you enter one of those shops that smell like incense and sell dreamcatchers and kitschy framed pictures of dolphins.
A has that horrible generic trip-hop beat which was copied and pasted across hundreds of other similar acts like Enigma and Clannad in the 90s so B gets my vote.
I had to really force myself not to abstain though.

I suppose all that traveller, new age crusty stuff was popular in the nineties amongst the herbal festival types. Spicy bean burger anyone? Sorry, can’t split these. Both bobbins. First abstain of the Cup for me. Given the picks so far, it won’t be the last. For emphasis:

Seen Bregovic live and it was a party! This just doesn't do much for me. Shame, I was glad to see him in this Cup.
B is alright but not brilliant.

Patchouli! Incense! Dream catchers! Those pictures of beaches backlit with moving lights making it look like the water is literally some cheap lighting effect.
This is wretched stuff. Embarrassing.

Grumpy buggers. I am very keen on Rising Above Bedlam. Yes; it is patchy and hasn't necessarily aged brilliantly, but it still hurts a spot for me.

People project so much onto this stuff don't they? Unfortunately 'world music' has got such a bad rep amongst music snobs that they can't get past that filter. It's just music.
I liked both. The haunting vocals of A were great, but that rhythm track did it no favours and I think it may also be from outside the 90s. B really lifts off with the chorus and the vocal is full of joy.

I don't believe that any of us have a problem with world music, other than the term itself, and to be honest, I don't really give a shit about that. It's the cheap appropriation of the music of different cultures, presented with a shitty generic 'chill out' beat slapped over the top. That's what I'm reacting to. It's lazy, it's fucking bland, and it's shit.
Honestly, I hate the projection of rationale for liking or disliking music, as if you've got some insight that we all just can't see, because we're blinkered by our cynicism. If you like it, fine, embrace it. But even new-age can be done well, and here it just isn't; it's unimaginative wretched shit.

Sadly enough though, A turns out to be released in 1989.

I'm going to out myself as Player A here, because I really really really didn't choose this godawful remix!! I'd never vote for it myself!!!!
The reason my clip didn't work was simply one missing character in the address.
So here's the real thing - a real magical moment in what remains my favourite Kusturica film.
Anyway, I'll vote for A and who nows, some people who've already votet might reconsider.
