I much prefer Portishead to REM. However we have one of REM's most effervescent tracks of the period against one of the few misfires from the generally great Portishead debut. Probably any other track from that would've won my vote, but this is just an ugly dirge.

I never liked the sound of this particular Portishead track much.

I'll go for A

I haven't listened to REM in so long that I almost forgot how much I like them.

Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

I like the Portishead LP more than the R.E.M. LP, but the fact is that I never want to hear that Portishead record again, and the R.E.M. cut is one of my favorite things on that record.

Pretty sure it's Mike Mills singing. See also, Superman.
It's always nice when he gets a lead vocal.

Never heard this REM before. Good track. Portishead sounding a bit too familiar right now.

Two bands I never got into, two new tracks to me.
a - this is very retro to my ears, very Byrdsy, but while hat's not bad in itself, I do find myself nfairly putting it up against some great tracks, and finding it wanting. I found it pleasant, but nothignng made it stand it out. Sounded like an album track. 5 / 10
b - I know the town better than the band. I never really got the Bristol sound, even though I was living there when it was in its pomp: Massive Attack and Tricky can do one, and so, on the evidence of this sludgy dirge, can Portishead. I remember now what put me off them in the first place: the vocals. Can't be dealing with them. Didn't make it to the end. 3 / 10

I only needed a few seconds of B to realise it wasn't going to get close to A. Simple, but the best things often are.
