I vaguely recall Ratcat from the time but couldn’t name you a song. There’s a generic 90s Fountains Of Wayne, theme from Friends type perkiness there. Whatever, it’s completely outclassed by a song from one of the latter half of the decade’s finest LPs, the very ace Bled White.

I felt like A wasn't my thing; then I heard B.

B feels like a nondescript part of the 90s MTV audiovisual landfill. A isn't a particularly creative choice, I feel, but it's a great track and easily wins this one.

B is one of the 25 songs on a small label pop comp, and not one of the ones you give a second listen to just to see if it sticks, either.

A is, as algroth mentioned, not exactly a "deep cut." But it is by a great artist from a decade not rich in them.

Exactly.
The growth of this kind of music was one of the worst things about the 90s and its still with us today.

A doesn't blow me away, but its pleasant enough.

B is the kind of thing you don't notice but... that's because it's completely forgettable from top to bottom.

A is Smith at his liveliest and most direct - and arguably not at his strongest - but B sounds like it was written for - and rejected by - Saved by the Bell.

A- God he was an ugly sod wasn't he? Probably why I never bothered with his solo career, although Heatmiser were all right. As always whenever I actually listen to one of his songs, I think, OK, tuneful, but so fucking generic and pointless I can hardly get through to the end. I did this time, and ten seconds later I've forgotten it completely 2.5 / 10
B - Aussie Indie, not a patch on the Go-Betweens. It's all right, although again it sounded hugely derivative to me. The guitar solo was OK and just about drags this over the line. 3 / 10

Hmm, never heard either one of these before. The Smith track is surprisingly catchy and I like the vocal. Ratcat sounded like a cross between Hanson and Redd Kross to me, which isn't necessarily bad in my book, but in this case a bit too obnoxious for my liking.

Since I hadn't heard A before, it sounds just as generic as B. Which I hadn't heard either.

A by a long way

I wish I hadn't been so late to the Elliott Smith "party"
