Re: 90s Cup Round 1 Match 1
Two of my favourite songs, I think I used Feel the Pain in the Noise cup
This is like Sophie's Choice!
Lenny Valentino has become a bit of a Summer favourite this year because I finally got around to reading Haines' autobiography and it was ace so LV was on constant rotation during that.
So B
The noise at the start of the Dinosaur Jr song makes me taste bourbon, the power of suggestion. I love J Macis' cracked whine as well.
I hope the other matches are easier
Moorcock, Moorcock, Michael Moorcock, you fervently moan.

The Dino Jr song is fine, their smoother mid period suited them for a while. But it’s blown away by a, for me, fairly definitive 90s highlight. Wonderful.

Have little to say about A - like most Dinosaur Jr. I've heard (which could be more than it currently is, granted), I feel like I ought to like what I hear but I often find the music disjointed and not particularly evocative, with J Mascis' guitar playing doing very little for me. I like B a lot though.

Good song without much energy (particularly for Dinosaur Jr.) vs. energetic rendering of something a bit dull.
The song wins. A it is, without a whole lot of conviction.

I do remember A at the time, so I guess that means its got something. But ultimately its post-grunge torpor doesn't move me. The Auteurs track is much more dynamic and gets my vote.

A is the track for which the term "indie landfill" was truly invented. Fucking dire.
B would win if it was three minutes of silence in comparison.

Dinosaur Jr often have a nice sound but the actual music is unimaginative teach-yourself-guitar book riffery.
That said, The Auteurs are often lauded for their ”songcraft” and suchlike but I’ve never heard an awful lot that sticks with me. Still, they have more punch and urgency here.

Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
