Re: CC GRAND FINAL- Match 3
B is great but isn't really a cover. A is obvious, but...errr...defining...

Shite, two great songs and I'm not voting for either.
Unless somebody tells me otherwise (and wiki doesn't), B is the original release of that song. And A is a Patti Smith original with a quote of an old song.
Abstain

Re: CC GRAND FINAL- Match 3
A is a rousing example of how to take someone else's song and completely reinvent it to become the version. I don't see why adding some of her own ideas means it's not a cover. If 'Gangsters' passed muster...
B meanwhile is most certainly not a cover. It is a band playing a song that someone else wrote and gave to them. They were the first people to do the song. Therefore not a cover.

Yes, B shouldn't have been allowed to enter this.
Anyway A sounds as thrilling as ever.

A is such an obvious pick it should be banned. But it's glorious (ha) too.

Re: CC GRAND FINAL- Match 3
Huh, Half Japanese's version of Gloria is the definitive one in my book, but that got a real kicking (as expected) in the loud cup. Patti's version is a decent second though, only let down by being able to play instruments, write lyrics and sing.
How do you get to the final of a Covers Cup, and throw the round by not knowing what a cover is? It's a bit mental. I mean, it was unlikely to win against this, but wtf?

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Grrr Patti Smith. When she’s not driving around picking up stray Bob Dylan songs and taking them to the pound she’s doing… this. I’m more of an Easter person. Don’t care for B though. I have a great-niece called Aurora and I like to spell out her name in the same rhythm as Gloria so

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Love both, but it's got to be A, not only for technical reasons.

Re: CC GRAND FINAL- Match 3
I have no idea whether B is a cover or not, I pretty much assumed so. Certainly if this Cup is being repeated then it will be checked more thoroughly.
I don't particularly like Patti but I have given her albums another go after going to the Mapplethorpe-exhibit two weeks ago in Sydney. There is a kind of toughness on her perfomance I like but some of her poetry just leaves me cold, as if she is taking the piss at times. This is very accessible and, in my view, a cover by adaptation which still leans heavily on the original.
