Tough. Two good covers.

Was all ready to vote for A - nicely sung, and a great choice - expecting B to be the normal Residents deconstruction, but they do re-imagine it a lot more interestingly than I expected. In the end, though, it doesn't sustain my interest for the whole thing once I get the point, so...close, but I think that's the deciding factor in sending me back to A - its comparative compactness.

The original of A seems to be the kind of hoary old cigs and stale ale blues rock that is never going to appeal to me. This is the sonic equivalent of throwing up on the night bus after too much cheap lager in a parochial night club. Son Volt are adding a bit of a country tinge. It's prettier than the original, but still fundamentally deeply boring to its very core.

B is another track that I had a major obsession about, I even shelled out for the Record Store Day 12" re-release of this on purple vinyl. It just seems much more inventive, the sheer nerve of nicking that Billie Jean shuffle and applying it to a Hank Williams cover. I love it unconditionally.

B
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

A is a dull song but it's played and sung nicely here.

B is as pointless and uninteresting as you'd expect from the Residents, though that jagged riff is catchy - I think it was on that Soulwax DJ album wasn't it?

Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

a - Ronnie Wood!?? Really? I don't know whether it's better than the original, and I'm not about to break the habit of a lifetime and listen to it. So it's all about the cover, which is another funereal essay in wrist-slitting pointlessness. I'm not listening to four minutes of this. no mark
b - Astonishing that a band whose entire career is built around deconstructing other people's songs has not made an appearance before. I never really got on with the anonymity and eyeballs, and their covers don't always resonate. This one doesn't, as it happens, but it still has more than enough to win this.

A- Really nice slide playing, terrible vocal, slightly dull song.

B - Enough interesting things happening in the beats and arrangement to distract from another ropy song.

Neither do a lot for me it has to be said.

Yes, liked the mash-up of that one. And here too, in comparison to the nasal chug of the Volt.
