A is nice but (having now heard it) I prefer the original.

B ... if I didn't know what it was ... hm ... No. The music's good. The vocal delivery is way too desperate.

Well, I haven't heard the original of A before, which I'm taking as being https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-5_6KLGZFM. It's not knocking my socks off, but I gather my taste isn't entirely in line with the majority of Brazil. I don't know if I've heard this cover before, or if it's just more familiar now I've heard the original. It does seem to ring a bell, though I'm finding it fairly underwhelming still. It does seem to bore on a bit.

I haven't heard the original of Fire and Rain before, either. James Taylor is also not lighting a fire under my feet, this is in much cheesier territory, but is that cello backing reminiscent of Oasis' "Whatever"? Ugh, I can tell from the off that I'm not going to like this. I suspect I'm going to be on the opposite side of the fence to fange and Moddie again, but I'm happy with the verdant nature of my own lawn.

A is a very staid, conservative cover of an old guard song from a period of great experimentalism. Seems an odd choice to make from a very rich genre.

B is a repeat of both song and artist, but it's better than the previous version of the song, and it's also a better version than the writer's. There are better Isleys covers, but I suppose that must count for something.

A transforms the excellent original (a song I love) into a most dull exercise. B tries a bit too hard, but at least tries.

a - I'm more or less allergic to South American styles, but comments above made me seek out the Jobim version, and a minute of that was like bathing in sunshine and rainbows after listening to Gilberto's one-note (mood, not music) version. It's so pedestrian and drab to my ears. 2.5 / 10
b - some slight, and vaguely rubbishy, singer-songwriter guff benefits from a soulful R & B make-over, but this is just silly, a gimmicky mess, not helped by two minutes of wibbling before they got around to the song, which remains wretched patchwork of cliched metaphor. Poor. 2.5 / 10

A, i suppose, but I might change my mind

B is a nice performance but it's a naff song and perhaps the weakest on that (generally really good) Isleys record. Certainly pales in comparison to the earlier pick of 'Machine Gun/Ohio'.

A is a mesmerising paring down of bossa nova to its essence by its greatest master and a magical record of intricacy and intimacy which is regarded as one of Brazilian pop music's standout moments. But BCB thinks it's boring and conservative. Sigh.

Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

A- Okay, not very exciting though.
B- Not up there with the very best Isley covers, I think the song is probably a little too downbeat and introverted for their style, but still pretty damn good.

A is lovely.

and B works a lot less well than Machine Gun/Ohio, as has been noted.
