It only just struck me that I've never heard the original of "Morning Dew" before, Einsturzende Neubauten's version is the one that's most familiar to me. Bonnie Dobson's original is quite beautiful, a bit like a more expensively/expansively produced Linda Perhacs. This isn't as good as either, obviously, but I guess there's an inherent quality to the original that's difficult to trash, even when it has an unnecessary guitar solo and earnest rawk vocals. It's not too bad, to be fair, for a transposition to Old Grey Whistle Test territory.

The Andy Williams version of "I Can't Get Used to Losing You" is a bit of a love/hate thing for me, those stabs of string are so well done, yet the vocal is such an ooze of smarm. The Beat version isn't musically as well crafted, and to be honest, it's probably the poorest ska cover in the cup so far. I'm struggling. This is more my natural territory, but it's just not a massively inventive cover.

Both quite good, albeit a bit on well-traveled roads. A spares the usual Allman's jam-happy overextension, so the focus is on the vocals, and damn if Greggie doesn't sing the hell out of it.

But B really owns it in a way A doesn't - it's more of the kind of thing that I like and look for - they make someone else's song their own. The Allmans, in the end, are too true to the original.

Both good. Don't think A quite pulls off the epic statement it wants to though. It sounds as if they're trying too hard almost. The Beat don't sound as if they're trying very hard at all and are all the better for it. It has a breezy, almost nonchalant, charm and I'd take it over the original.

A is not really the ABB but The 31st of February, an earlier combo with Duane, Gregg and Butch, and you can tell at this point they were not yet cooked as a band. Quite a poor performance to be honest. B is an old fave of mine, and I would have picked it had I thought about it.

a - It may not be the original, but I always thought of this as a Tim Rose song, and it seems that Gregg did too, considering the way he's phrasing his vocal. I think they make a better fist of it than TR though, as they tone down the melodrama. That wasn't ad at all 5.5 / 10
b - I remember the AW hit version as well as this one. That was when I found out what pizzicato was. I like The Beat a lot, but as with the Specials my like tends to be in inverse proportion to the amount of ska. This is a case in point - really excellent pop vocals, subverted by the backing. Saxa's interventions are always welcome, but this is one of their lesser singles. 4.5 / 10

Weird match-up. Both are enjoyable but I had pretty much completely forgotten A within seconds of it finishing, while B sounded a lot like they were tentatively having a first go at jamming on the song, rather than being a finished version suited for single release.

I think I will plump for A as B annoyed me a bit after a while, there was something schmaltzy and silly about it.

Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Heard Morning Dew first in the version of Long John Baldry and really loved that version-any other covers never came close. This was alright.
B is good and upbeat.
