Re: CC Round 8 Match 8
I've just been reading some of the background to the Tom Clay record which is quite interesting. This is like proto-sampling which makes it interesting in and of itself. I don't think it really works as a record, but I applaud the sentiment of why it was done.
I went through a stage in the mid 2000s of buying comps with alluring titles like ' The Indonesian Psych Funk Underground: 1968-1975'. Very little of that stuff has stayed with me, mainly because it was full of stuff like B - ineptly played, badly recorded covers. The only attraction of this is that its from an unusual, exotic country -which in itself seems vaguely patronising. They're releases for jaded Western ears who have listened to too much music and are desperately trying to find something different to give them a 'hit'.
A because at least there's a point to it.

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

A might be of academic interest but as a listening experience it's pretty appalling.
B had a silly tinny vocal but a good guitar sound.

Re: CC Round 8 Match 8
Don't think much of either. A is a cynical cash-in by a DJ who seems to have specialized in them; it's not a 'cover' by my definition, and the vague degree to which it's mildly interesting has nothing to do with the music.
B is not interesting in any other way than where it's from - in those pre-web days things had to make their way to musicians in other countries the old-fashioned way, meaning a lot more slowly. Unfortunately I don't hear cultural exchange here - just a hack band trying to do a straight cover - but it's at least more sincere than A.

Hmm, I quite like the concept of A, but having read the wiki background of Tom Clay, you get the distinct impression that this guy was a major league arsehole. It's an interesting selection though, and I don't want to penalise whoever chose this on the basis of the creator being a cock.
I get why someone might have an album of this kind of stuff, and I'd be surprised if I didn't know who this was, but there's not much to approve of, there's not much new brought to the cover. She has a nice voice though.
Score draw. Abstain.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

B is more interesting in its abrasiveness and delivery. There's so much great music yet to be unearthed from completely ignored areas like South-East Asia that only pop up in little bits and pieces. Good stuff.
I don;t know anything about Tom Clay, only that he was a DJ and compiled this song. It rings true for me as I remember a similar line of questioning in my primary school. Blessed are the children and the ignorant....

a - Words and numbers fail me
b - this is dreadfully recorded, but harmless, and faintly charming 3 / 10

B reminded me a lot of those crappy covers done in Spain at the time, except this was probably better. I don't see the point of A, sorry.
