Re: CC Round 8 Match 4
I do have a Timi Yuro album somewhere and it's full of this kind of rather bland early 60s big balladry, rather than her later northern soul type stuff (which is what I was hoping for). A is okay I suppose, but very much of its time.
The Rod/Jeff pick is every bit as bad as I feared with a horrible 90s MTV production. Terrible.

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

I hope Beck's still enjoying the Rolls that he bought with his fee for this, and that the high price (putting up with Rod for a few hours PLUS the price of the car) was worth it.

A isn't much cop, you can hear the sellotape and felt tips on this cut-price effort.
B had a much bigger budget, the production is much more professional, the musicians much more skilled and the song far superior. But the result is complete trousers.

I don't think there's an original of "You Can Have Him" on youtube, so I'm going to judge against the Nina Simone version, which should be a challenge for anyone. Hmm, obviously not a live rendition, is this Spector at the controls, or someone copying him on the cheap? It certainly sounds big enough. It's better than Nina's version, which was surprisingly restrained, I'm quite impressed with this effort. *doffs cap*
I don't know the original of "People Get Ready" either, but that's another entry in the "could well be pretty damn good, if this kinda thing was my cup of tea" pile. Sounds well crafted, etc, doesn't particularly speak to me, but I get why people may well love it. Got to love the production values on this cover, they've stuck a ginormous dayglo flag atop Mount Mideighties. Sorry, but it is a load of hoary old cack.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

No idea what's the original of A, certainly not the Irving Berlin standard I was expecting. Not bad, but forgettable.
B is dreadful beyond belief. During the minute or so I could stand, Beck's playing was as good as expected, but the overall sound made me wanna burn things. Jeezus

The nerve of some people. Great singer, superlative guitar player. Earnest song. Wrong fucking decade. Idiot.

Rayge turned me on to Timi Yuro and she is great. I mean I knew a couple of her tracks already as a good northern soul fan.

Re: CC Round 8 Match 4
a - Well, thank fuck for that. Timi Yuro has been a favourite vocalist for more than 50 years now, and this single is one of the reasons why. For a few years in the mid-60s it was my all-time favourite. Roy Hamilton's original is a lightweight, country-tinged romp with a cheery tone that is totally at odds with the lyrical content. Sounds like he's had a lucky escape. Timi, though, is fucking furious with this treacherous bastard, passion barely contained as the churning backing, with that odd gonzo guitar spraying random lines over it, gets louder and more insistent. And then she does that patented melismatic scream at the end of the second verse, and the producer chucks in the kitchen sink, all needles in the red for 30 seconds: as the chorus of harpies recite the crimes of the miscreant 'him', Timi keeps on belting it out over the top. Three minuses: she misses out the third verse, probably for reasons of length, the fade is too abrupt (ditto) and the digital remaster has lost quite a lot of that extraordinary echoing power and dynamic range, especially at the top end – I just checked with my 7", I'm not imagining it 8.5 / 10
b - The Impressions' original, as I'm sure everyone knows, is a thing of delicacy and grace. And I retain a fondness for Beck in the Yardbirds and the JB Group albums, where he and Stewart did some interesting covers. But as others seem to agree, this is a step too far, as the innocent gospel-tinged reverence in which the song is drenched is overwhelmed in bombast and rock posturing. I don't hate it, got through it, might have enjoyed it more if they'd picked a song I hadn't heard before. Not that it would have beaten You Can Have Him anyway. 4 / 10
