Re: CC Round 8 Match 2
B will inspire yet more debate on what is a cover. Jerry Garcia doing a Grateful Dead song? Mmmm.
I'm surprised this issue has come up as often as it has, were people trying to be too clever in their selections..?
A is pretty standard 80s/90s US alt rock; a heavier, faster REM essentially. It's not very distinctive, but it's inoffensive enough. I don't have to worry too much about the technicalities of whether I should vote for B as it's deadly dull anyway.

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Re: CC Round 8 Match 2
I suspect people know which side of the debate I fall on - B is simply not a cover to me. Even if it was, I'm not a fan of Garcia's voice, don't think it needs to be 7 minutes long, and wonder, other than Grisman (who I like a great deal in other contexts) what it adds to the original.
I wish A was more interesting on some other level besides being performed by kids who actually know who Phil Ochs is, and want to cover him. An intriguing choice, but a nondescript performance.

Re: CC Round 8 Match 2
Well, Phil Ochs is one of my musical idols, and Tape From California is pretty much a flawless album from start to finish. I'm kinda shocked to hear him being covered, you just take for granted that he's largely forgotten. This isn't better than the original (like, what would be?), but it's a decent enough track that recalls mid-period Bad Religion. Obvious bonus points for choosing the coolest source material.
Hearing B was by The Dead made me dread searching it out on youtube, but it's actually much shorter than the 15 weeks I expected. And it's not bad, in a very surprising turn of events. It's quite nice indeed. My belief system is shaken. Anyway, onto the cover: I guess this isn't too bad either. What's wrong with me?
But I'm voting for the more inventive pick here. No offense to B, which was a fine selection indeed. A

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

A is from the better end of US hardcore, ie the side where the energy and passion aren't hampered by substandard material or playing.
And also, it is an actual cover. A man playing his own (pleasant but corny) song is, as has frequently been established already, not a cover. A cover is done by somebody else. Foul, B.

A is a rare treat, an excellent cover of an excellent song, done in a very different way but still keeping its essence, and the result is very good per se.
B is my pick and it IS a cover, and it's exactly the presence of Dave Grisman what brings inside the song a new dimension that was not present in the original, as anybody with a pair of ears should get. Yes, I am upset.
But I will vote for A because it's better.
...and anyway, I'm gonna lose

I’m no fan of the Dead – Dylan and the Dead put paid to that – but quite liked this one. But if it’s not a cover… which is a pity. It’s a good song.

Re: CC Round 8 Match 2
a - another Ochs fan here, although if I had listened to this blind I never would have guessed its provenance, at least until they enunciated the title. It's probably just my ears, but if you're going to drown the lyrics in racket, you don't need to choose a song with such great words. To me it sounded more Husker Du than Bad Religion or REM , and it added nothing to the song, but I always kind of liked this sort of thing, so 5 / 10
b - I have no problem with this being picked. I don't know the Dead studio recording, but this version sounds nothing like that band to me. Sure Jerry's voice is limited, but this is all about the dance between the guitar and mandolin, and maybe you caught me at a soft moment but I actually like this. 5 / 10
