Re: CC Round 7 Match 5
A actually amused me, and the playing and singing was good. But I never need to hear it again, while B is one of the few Carpenters tracks that has any fire at all, and is a great song.

Re: CC Round 7 Match 5
I absolutely loathe ukelele covers. Who decided they were implicitly interesting or original. I know the last time I checked, there were at least 9 ukelele covers of "Bela Lugosi's Dead" on youtube. This is very, very wrong and smug.
I'm guessing the original of Superstar isn't very well known to anyone, but it sounds quite ok in that Carly Simon doing a Bond theme way. Whatever that is. The Carpenter's version isn't as good, it's very much a light entertainment/variety reading of the same tune. It's definitely better than A though.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I would vote against A if I didn't dislike Karen Carpenter's syrup voice so much.

I can't take the Carpenters at all. And I had a good laugh at A. same as Thang-y, I wouldn't vote for it, but it's the fucking Carpenters and I want to vote against them.

Re: CC Round 7 Match 5
a - mildly amusing heard once, although rather forced, and very much let down by the vocals. And the smuggery 4.5 / 10, minus two for a live version 2.5 / 10
b - It's a good job my relationship with Thang-y is not based on musical appreciation, because we hardly agree on anything. Case in point, Karen's voice. The sickliness into which Carpenters' recordings often descend I put squarely at Richard's door. Karen has a beautiful pop voice, and gives a fine rendering of this song (although it was a particularly craven marketing decision to change the title). All that said, I bought the Delaney and Bonnie single on release, was very fond of it then, and, having just listened to it again for the first time in at least 30 years, find I still am; one of Bonnie's best performances, I think, while the strings and the arrangement generally are far too staid and gloopy compared with the ramshackle but exciting D&B original. So, judged purely as a cover, 3.5 / 10

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

A is the kind of thing I can imagine being amused by if I saw it in a live setting, but not for sitting at home, thanks.
B is a bit Butlins but the strength of the actual song earns it the points here.

Christ almighty. I think I've just reached a limit on these, sorry. I didn't know the Carpenters was a cover, it's not a song I particularly like, its icky. But...

Met/seen Ukulele Orchestra at WOMADelaide a few years ago- pretty funny bunch! Had no problem with the novelty character of it, it is pretty nifty stuff.
I simply cannot abide The Carpenters. If Googamooga had know about this revival he'd be back in a hurry.
