A is so impressed with themselves for covering a slice of retro cool that they forget to do anything with it.

B
is slight, but Case is a surprisingly good soul shouter, and they sound like they're having fun instead of patting themselves on the back for their hipness.

For some reason, I always think the title "Get Carter" is missing an "Oooh," at the start. Makes it slightly camper than the actual film. The original isn't particularly memorable. You get the feeling that Stereolab are just trying to steal some of the cool factor of the film by doing this, but they do beef it up a tad. It's just a shame that it's so nondescript that there's not an awful lot you can do to it, without losing the essence of the source.

I wasn't familiar with Wilson Pickett's original, but it's a fairly startling intro, and he absolutely knocks it out of the park. Restraint is not the order of the day, this is the kind of soul hollerin' I can understand people raving about, rather than the damp velour that has received love in this Cup. I don't see what The Plimsouls are trying to achieve here, other than sounding like a very average garage band recording an inferior copy of an original. It's everything that a cover shouldn't be, a straight retread that is lesser than the original in every respect.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Interesting match, in a good way. Both appeal to me in some ways, but A more.

Not familiar with the original of A, never saw the film or heard its music. Not sure about what the point of A is. And B is definitely a great power pop reading of a forgotten soul track. And while Peter Case is no Wilson Pickett when it comes to singing, he does a good job, and the version as a whole has more guts than the original.

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

A does a good job, staying true to the original but bringing Stereolab's space-age groove to the fore.
B has a good vocal but is musically a bit too obviously a rock band trying to do funk, which lends it a bit of a pub-rock feel.

A is great, if a little close to the original. Really nice pick. B is above average (certainly for this cup) but it's second best here.

a - not as big a fan of the movie as some, and I don't remember the theme, so this comes over as a harmless bit of background grooving. Would be very pleased to have this going on in a lift/elevator. Could have done with more prominent voices for my taste, but it's a big solid OK. 5.5 / 10
b – intrigued by the thought of a 'lost classic' by WP, and thinking the title suggested he would channel Larry Williams, I gave it a listen first. A bit disappointed to hear a pretty standard bark rasp and squeal vocal from Pickett, a song that sounded more Joe Tex and a will this do arrangement. Girl group are OK, but the rest is hackneyed guff. And the cover is that vanishingly rare thing, a ghost cover that not only is neither an embarrassment nor an outrage, but makes a better fist of the song than the original. But the song is still pants. 4.5 / 10
