Re: CC Round 7 Match 3
Liked A more than I expected - have always liked the song a lot - and B is a bit overlong, but Cooder always benefits from not being the singer, and his playing is quite lovely. Close, but B.

Re: CC Round 7 Match 3
I've never heard of 5 O'Clock World, and I've never heard of the magnificently monikered Mr Ketchum. Well, the original (presuming The Vogues is that) is another cup of diluted piss, as forgettable a 60s pop track as I've ever come across. Ketchum's eyebrows seem to follow me around the room. What a weird album cover to choose to use, it screams 'service station CD'. This is clearly too country for me, and it sounds like the kind of modern popular country that is absolute anathema to me.
Hmm, I'm not sure what the original is of "Dark End of the Street", but I'm listening to a decent Percy Sledge rendition right now. Why isn't this more famous, it's quite lovely. This version is over twice the length, twice as dreary, and half as effective. If it was against something that wasn't absolutely abhorrent to everything that I hold dear, it would struggle.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Well I don't like country music but I really rather like A - it reminds me at moments of John Denver. And maybe I'm just not in the mood for B, I can see it's lovely but it's morning, I've had my coffee but ...

Holy shit, Dark End of the Street is close to be my fave song of all times, or at least one the top 5000. And there are a bunch of great covers around including a lovely instrumental by Ry himself, but the singing in this version reminds me of those X-factor singers that love to go away from the original melody just to show how broad their vocal range is. Gladly they shut up for a while to let Ry do his thing. That saved the song. Certainly enough to beat the pretty forgettable A.

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Re: CC Round 7 Match 3
B is a dreadful version of one of the great songs. The guitar work is nice but the meandering structure and wibbly vocals completely drain it of all its power. A was pleasant and inoffensive, if a bit bland.

Re: CC Round 7 Match 3
Quite right, B is not at all a good version, great as the song is. The guitar break is the only highlight. The easy listening take on 5 o'clock world is fine.

a - I guess I'm the only one here who thinks the Vogues version of this is one of greatest vocal group recordings of the 1960s? Yep, thought so. This is a great stomping, soaring song about being full of youthful energy (which resonated with the teenage Rayge and his first forages into paid imprisonment) yet, while the Vogues vocal arrangement is full of spunk and brio, of soaring hope and a sense of unlimited possibility and joyful engagement with the world, this slows it down and relocates the tune to miserable middle age. In the original, 5 o'clock meant getting out of the factory, unleashing the joy and riding the rainbow. Mr K sounds like he's looking forward to going to a bar and getting quietly pissed while listening to the jukebox then going home alone. Because it's such a fine song, it's not a bad record, but as a cover it's total pants. 2 / 10
b - sorry to be contrary, Osgood, but I've never understood why the original of this song by Jimmy Thingummy on Goldwax is so highly rated. It's a rather ordinary and derivative song to my ears, and the vocal's run of the mill. And what street has a dark end, as opposed to side? That's always bothered me. As for this version, well, Ry Cooder is obviously a fine musician, but you all know how much that counts with me. As far as I'm concerned, he's done nothing I'm interested in since Safe as Milk, and this sort of funereal tasteful nodded-out guitaring is so muso it makes me want to puke and scream, not necessarily in that order. And the vocals were shit. 2 / 10
Not going to abstain, so I'm going for A, because at least the song is worth something, even if he does traduce it horribly.

And me. Totally love the vocal arrangement of it. Brilliant!
Ketchum doesn't do much with that but he made at least a decent sandwich out of it.
B is dragging a bit but when Cooder starts bending his strings it is a bit special. So:
