Battle of the Black Power anthems! I like them both, but Paul bends the song to his purpose, while Havens just sounds uncomfortable singing to a funk groove. A is probably the lesser song of the two, but it's better in every other way.

Excellent match. Why do the best ones always meet like this, when there is so much chaff blowing around?

RH by a whisker.

Very surprised to see B losing so heavily here. I've known the Havens track for many years and am a fan. It's a great version

Aw crap, I have to listen to a frigging Wings song, before passing judgement. Life can kick you when you're down. Well, the original was piss-weak as expected, and unfortunately Billy Paul has chosen not to use a different tune or words. It's a shit song that goes on interminably, has been given a cheesy syrupy swing, and attempts to give it depth by adding samples of more able wordsmiths. I don't know what anyone else is getting from this. I don't approve.

I've never heard the original of "Going Back to my Roots", but hopefully I glean enough from it without having to sit through the full 10 minutes. Can't be as bad as Wings anyway, surely. Well, I didn't think I'd heard it before, but I've clearly heard the Odissey version. This Lamont Dozier track is much, much better. I'd vote for the original, definitely. Ok, switching to Richie Havens. There's something almost hypnotic about the repetitive piano chords coming through, I like that it sounds practically machine driven. I'm not sure it's better than the original, but it's a decent rendition of a much better song.

B easily.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Not a big Disco fan, and Paul goes OTT politicizing what could otherwise be a fun song, if that's your bag.

Easy

B

It is indeed a monster track as G says, which is a pity for A cause I really like it too.

I suspect it's because I really dislike the song but nothing Billy Paul can do will make it worth listening to. In fact it's like polishing a turd.

Whereas B is rather good.

Blimey, a match where I am not truly fond of the originals (well, that's an understatement for A) but LOVE the versions. I could vote for any of them in most matches so far. Played both twice and ultimately A seemed more satisfying. Sorry B, great pick.

A has a little bit too much '70s smoothness but it's an engaging effort.
B is a pretty horrible mashup of Havens' totally unsuited vocals with proto-"funky house" backing.

a - fab macca whacky funky-wunkiness with added doo-dah (and, strangely enough, also with echoes of a Nesmith-funk tune and arrangement whose title escapes me at the moment). Which baby did I torture in a previous life to deserve this? Pausing at two minutes to see if B can save me from it, though hopes are not high...
b - so how is this funky, since there is no wah-wah or cowbells? Sounds like the usual fidgety folk with R&B flourishes I've associated with Havens since I first saw him in Woodstock. His groaning baritone never really appealed to me, and I did not listen to much, but I'm really, and unexpectedly, enjoying this. Invigorating 6.5 / 10 and my eternal thanks for saving me ever hearing the whole of A

I heard Havens do this live about a decade ago at WOMADelaide- it was a stonking groovefest. And Billy Paul proved at least he's more than an adulterer and a soul floozie....

I don't even like "Let 'em in" but it almost annoyed me that he was singing the wrong lyrics.
