Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

A's going to win this going away - and maybe rightly so - but someone needs to acknowledge how good B is. They bring a lot of energy to it and don't just copy it slavishly. This might be the best thing I've heard from them, and that includes "Friday..."

Saying it's better than 'Friday on My Mind' is madness, but B is certainly a good, tough romp through the song. I did prefer A which is comfortably the best pick of a pretty weedy round so far, so B is unlucky.

Thank fuck for these two entrants (I have an idea, but I won't out them) is all I can say, I hope some of the other entrants are watching and learning. Rather than pick an indie band from Burnley covering Barry Manilow at the village hall, it is possible to pick good stuff, like this, you know?

Ultimately A has a bit more for me musically with its Southern grit, but that's a hell of a cover from The Easybeats too.

I can't find the original of A anywhere, so I'm unsure how I'm supposed to judge it as a cover. It sounds like a pretty good soul track, but it's not really my kinda thing.

I do know the original of B, obviously, so I'm struggling to see why anyone should cover it, given that it's such a monstrous slab of public consciousness. It's not going to beat it, and it doesn't. I don't think the tinny production, tambourines, or backing vocals help it. They're trying to do something with it, but I'm not sure they're really successful.

Abstain. I can't judge A, and I don't think B is really a successful cover.

DF, the original of A can be found here. It is a nice R&B number by Little Willie (hehe) John. And A is a nice cover done by transposing it into southern soul field. Excellent.

But I agree with those who feel that B deserves some recognition, it has the strength and power that justifies the reading of the monster original. And you know what? I think it brings some additional fun to it.

Ah, thanks for that. Ok, now I can see what A has done to the song, it's properly fleshed it out by moving it into the soul sphere. It hereby can bear the honour of my vote.

I like B but it's too treble-y for me. A has more guts.

a - Oooooh, arranged by Gene Barge. Let's hope he gets to play. LM is someone I barely heard before; he shows good R&B shouter chops on this. I never cared for Wee Willie, so won't be checking out the original. This one is fine by me, with one large caveat, namely fuck me, Daddy G was in the studio and no one saw fit to hand him a sax? And, of course [broken record]this isn't soul[/broken record], unless you want to use the term as an alternative to race music. Gutbucket R&B, and none the worse for that. 5.5 / 10
b - As a record, this isn't bad at all, but judging it against one of the five greatest Spector/Nitzsche productions it's always going to sound like a rather weedy retread. As it is, it's probably better than any UK contemporary cover of a Philles release, largely because they have refrained from a risible attempt at reproducing the Wall of Sound 4.5 / 10
