Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

St Etienne just seem to have used a generic backing track with no relation to the original, or the vocal line here. Sounds so much like every other indie-dance track from 1990. Sounds like it's being played at the wrong speed though, somehow.

Couldn't Dave have afforded a few more people on stage? It's like Slipknot have hit middle-age hard. This is less cheesy than some of the risible Chi-lites-like efforts that have been in this cup, but it does have an air of comfy slippers and a big mug of smugness. The key change at 3:00 is almost physically painful.

I'm struggling to justify the existence of either of 'em. Nah. Abstain, unless I change my mind.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Once again the fishy one nails it. B is just so "Public TV Arts Show" that I want to apply a condition to my donation that they never, never show that again. Byrne generally radiates smugness, but occasionally there's flashes of humor. Not here.

A is dull, but a lot less annoying.

I've never really got into Saint Etienne. They're obviously (based on Stanley's writing at least) very intelligent and knowledgeable about their music and they put a lot of thought and craft into it, but it's just too smooth and twee for me most of the time. 'Hobart Paving' is great, though; and I've always liked this lo-fi indie-house version of the Neil song, too.

I do like some Talking Heads things and indeed the occasional bit of Byrne's solo career, and his label Luaka Bop has put out some good things.

It also put out a record entitled The Soul of Black Peru which featured a song by Byrne himself. That alone ensures that this is not a career low.

Two artists covering someone you wouldn't expect.
I've always loved the Saint Etienne track, which I seem to remember was their first single. It's a radical reinterpretation which transforms Young's original into something mysterious and sultry.
B isn't quite as bad as I feared. It's a lively arrangement, but it can't disguise how ill-suited Byrne is to the song. He's like a dancing policeman pretending to have a good time for the camera at The Notting Hill Carnival.

For the first 30 sec I thought I was gonna like A, but then it became a big disappointment. Please put your dirty hands on somebody else's songs.
I liked B in spite of the dreadful original. Maybe because unlike most people here, I do like Byrne.

The Saint Etienne - not my pick - is better than 95% of the dross in this Cup. B is entertaining but blown away.

Don't like anything about B. A was pretty monotonous.

Whitney’s version is a fine record, Byrne’s take justifies my not taking interest in any of his post-Bush of Ghosts efforts.

I take Saint Etienne as tastemakers (English Weather/The Trip comps) over their music but this is one that they blast out of the atmosphere.
