Re: CC Round 5 Match 9
a - I was a minute into this before I realized it was Final Solution – prior to this I was fascinated by Mr Dog*'s mike-twirling incompetence. I'll start again from the beginning. I love the Pere Ubu (and indeed Rocket from the Crypt) versions of this, and I have to say that hearing it sung in Swedish doesn't impair my pleasure in any way. In fact I'm really enjoying the guitar, and enjoying the fuck out of everything, basically (even the mike-twirling incompetence is beginning to seem endearing. Damnfinio. 7.5 / 10
b - is going to have to go some to beat that, and seeing as it's a f**k band with yet another cover of the rubbishier end of the Scrotes' repertoire, I can't see it happening, but I'll give it a go for form's sake. I haven't heard much of Earth Wind and Fire, but whenever I do, I hear a really good vocal group, with great vocal arrangements as well as performances, backed by disco-funk-cheese, which is disconcerting – although I did enjoy the trebly guitar. Truth to tell, though, after that jabby, screechy, opening section, it slipped by in an entirely friction-free way, and I enjoyed it more than I suspected. 5.5 / 10

Re: CC Round 5 Match 9
The picker of A has made a valiant and tenacious effort to convert BCB to the charms of Bob Hund over the years, but I'm afraid I remain resolutely uncharmed.
It just sounded like an indistinguishable noise and starting and stopping after each thirty seconds hardly made it more interesting to listen to. Meh.
B is a lovely thing indeed, and the mellifluous jazz-funk treatment works a treat.

A is quite a straight rendering again, but I'm liking the energy he's imparting into it, and the attack of those guitars, even if the synth szzwwooops are cheesy and uncalled for. I mean, it's krautrock with a bit of Velvets guitar and loud noises. It's hard to actively dislike.
If you'd have told me beforehand that Earth Wind and Fire had recorded "Got to Get You Into My Life", and that I'd love it, I'd have been bloody surprised. With good reason, because this is just elevator music, and has no need to exist.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Re: CC Round 5 Match 9
A plays it pretty straight (translation aside) but goes about it the right way, capturing the creeping paranoia of the original but adding more fire and panic.
B is another soul/funk cover of a Beatles song. It's a minor Beatles song I like, but this is a cheesy '70s rendition of it.

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Re: CC Round 5 Match 9
I wish I could have the experience Rayge just had. B is, contrary to what people here are saying, one of the great Beatle covers. It outdoes the original rather handily and in fact finds the joyous funk/soul groove in it that was always there but that Pauly was always a bit too - sorry - white -to fully bring out. Unfortunately I've heard it a billion times - it was incredibly prevalent on AM radio, in part because the Beatles own version had been a hit a few years previous with the release of the Rock and Roll comp (speaking of things that had no reason to exist) and, while I still like it, and am gratified that some of what I look for in this competition is there in spades, there's something a bit too "fish in a barrel" about its choice for me.
Fortunately, I quite liked A. Went in thinking it was more of the usual genre-exercise, but it's performed with spirit and abandon. To paraphrase Ray, I liked it more than I expected to.

Another good tie.
A because it has moved me to check a band I had often heard about but overlooked. That's one thing versions are for. But B is a great pick, just a bit on the obvious side.

Both good choices. I am more a sucker for EW&F i guess, and in the end that makes the difference here. More '70s breezy cheese please.

On any other day it could have been EWF. But the abrasiveness of Mr. hund just scrubbed the speakers of my computer nicely clean. Effective.

I like A a lot, esp. the guitars (except for a bit in the 3rd act).
I like some EW&F, but this was never one I liked much.
