A has that kind of polished alt rock sound that you heard a lot in the 90s, the kind of overproduced sound you got on Garbage records. It's a bit sad to hear The Banshees so obviously past their best and robbed of their former distinctiveness.
I didn't like the production of B at all with it's string washes and massed choirs. It sounded like the kind of emotionally manipulative music you get in a Hollywood film where a kid is lying in a hospital bed but says something inspirational. The Bush bits sounded like they came from a different record (any record by Kate Bush basically) entirely.
abstain.

I'm not aware of either of the originals of these. My opinions on Television have been oft-stated, they're punk for Elton John fans. Though I've never said that before. The single "Little Johnny Jewel Pt 1" is at least under-produced, it sounds really cheaply recorded. Not an interesting song, by any means. This is the second disappointing entry from Siouxsie in this competition, both times covering a pretty unexciting original, and not doing enough to make it interesting JVC's guitaring is a bit more distinctive here though, when he gets to squeal a little.

Roy Harper is really frustrating for me. When I saw him supporting Joanna Newsom, his voice was enormous and angry, his songs were full of beauty and fire. On record, he comes across quite dreary. Although I guess there's a quiet elegance to this. Pete & Kate look like they're in the waiting room prior to an audition for Tomorrow's World. Was this for a TV show or something ( - ah, the clapping at the end would indicate so)? Kate's voice is beautiful, Pete's is as boring as normal.

To be honest, I'm just voting for Kate's voice here, I think. B

A was alright but it's not one of Television's best songs and the production had too much of an early '90s sheen to it. It sounded a bit Steven Wilson.
B was an odd mixture of the fumbling and the graceful. Kate Bush's voice didn't suit it at all and it sounded like there was a delicate, small song being smothered in sickly arrangements... and yet I quite liked the overall effect.

I still hold a grudge on Pete and Kate - who I generally like separately - for the treacly "Don't Give Up." Their voices just don't work together. Don't know what it is, but it's a turnoff.

I like the production on A, quite honestly. At least it's guitars. The drum and keys sounds are actually inoffensive, which is rare for me to think for anything recorded during that time. The record as a whole is not as good as I remembered, however. I think she's just going for 'music I liked growing up' rather than thinking of how it suits her voice or the arrangements. This just happens to be one of the better ones (though as others have pointed out, it's far from TV's best song).

B left me cold, nothing wrong, but it seemed to pretend some depth that simply wasn't there (or reached me at the wrong time, possibly). And I quite liked the arrangement and production of A, certainly more than the original.

a - So, the Banshees take on what is by some distance Television's best record, drag it into a kitchen and polish the life out of it. She seems to have a slightly lower vocal register than old Skinny Fingers, and is probably a 'better' singer, but the rest of the band, well fuck knows what they're doing. The Ork single (parts One [img][/img] Two) is a splendidly confrontative thing, with more spikes than a junkie porcupine, and they've decided to go for tasteful chiming and beveled edges (and an odd vomiting noise at the end - edgy, man). Not for me 2 / 10
b - A Reg warbler and Squeaky the Tory take on a FabMaccaWhackyThumbsAloft song. Give me fucking strength. Like DF I do like Kate on her own (and unlike him can sit through the odd Gabriel track), but the combo of all three, fucking hell. Lasted two minutes. 1.5 / 10

I'm liking Kate's vocals tonight but the song is a drag. I like A well enough to give it the nod.

Good pick for Siouxsie there...love that bit o'menace in Steve's guitar.
Liz Fraser's version is the bomb but Kate Boooshhh yums up a great Roy Harper-song rather nicely!

Not much of a fan of any of these artists, but despite Bush's voice, I'm finding the pure poignancy of B drawing me in.
