I suspect this is going to be one of those landslide victories. I wouldn't automatically vote for Bowie but I do like this one and don't like A at all.

Re: CC Round 5 Match 3
An interesting pairing with surprising similarities.
I guess in the end I like B more. Not that I don't like Del's version of the Jay & the American's tune, but I like both vesrions of 'Sorrow' better anyway.

Thankfully a decent tie!
Difficult because I know one very well and the other not at all. Loved the orchestration and sound of A, but (and I don't know the original either) on first listen the tune seemed a little uninspired.

Re: CC Round 5 Match 3
Well, I'd never heard Jay & The Americans original before, but It was surprisingly listenable. I liked the huge sound, and the cavernous sounding vocal line. I guess this is a cover in the traditional sense of the term, because it's a very straight retread, just recorded in a less interesting way. Which I guess might be interesting for devotees of early 60s obscurities, but I'm struggling to see the point.
I guess Bowie's version of "Sorrow" is an improvement, just because of Bowie, and the multi-tracked vocals add a bit of dynamism that's missing in the original. I'd like to give the vote to A, just for introducing me to a more interesting original, but that would seem to be against the spirit of the competition.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Re: CC Round 5 Match 3
Once again I find myself in agreement with the Dark One.
I find it hard to vote for either, B because it's an obvious choice from a BCB stock artist and A because it covers a song where the grit is mostly in the production rather than the song itself, and does a worse job of it to boot.
B, I guess, as it is at least one of the better tracks on Pin UPs.

Re: CC Round 5 Match 3
I'm a little hesitant to vote for Bowie as he does seem a bit too obvious a choice, and also because he was usually pretty crap at covers.
This, though, is a highlight of Pin Ups and though I enjoyed the Del Shannon song I think it pales in comparison to the original.

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Re: CC Round 5 Match 3
a - well, I was quite the fan of Jay and the Americans, several singles, but somehow I'd missed this one, or blotted it out, because as far as I was concerned up to now, the Shang's He Cried was the original. Live and learn. And then forget again. Del made some great singles in the early 60s with Max Crook, but this is an album track from when he was on the way back down, and judging from the chamber orchestra backing, probably after he started taking himself too seriously. Interesting voices in the back-up, but I missed Del unleashing his mighty falsetto, and I still think the Shangs did the definitive on this one. Bit of a curio, um, 4.5 / 10
b - With your long blonde hair and eyes of blue, the only thing we get from you is Rubbish, we used to sing at Bobby Moore whenever he disgraced the pitch at White Hart Lane in the sixties. But it was the Merseybeats, of Mindbenders or whatever bunch of interchangeable Lancastrian losers had had a hit with it, we were disrespecting (along with Bobby), rather than the sainted David. But of course this was before TSD adopted his fey twerp persona and recorded and released Pin-ups, an album that suddenly confronted we squealing Ziggyites with the possibility that behind the facepaint, our hero had neither taste nor talent. I've been dreading tracks turning up from it, because I know he's a saint round here. I like a lot of his original stuff, but in the same way I can't bring to mind a decent cover of one of his songs, I can't recall a single track from Pin-Ups (mind you, I only listened to it a couple of times before throwing it away, and haven't heard anything from it save this track since the year it was released) that did not make me cringe a bit. At least he's fopping up something that was ridiculous to begin with. 2.5 / 10

B is my favourite track from Pin Ups. There are so many great covers like this one out there and so few in this cup!

I think we've all been - at least I've been - guilty of overthinking it. I take back what I said in earlier rounds. Sometimes obvious is good. The Del is fine to me but is blown out of the water.

Yes, it looks that way. Everyone counting on more obvious stuff from others to make their own leftfield picks stand out more, something like that. I’m still enjoying it though!

Re: CC Round 5 Match 3
B's version of "Sorrow" is one of the few 'Pin Ups' tracks that I find worthwhile, and i'll take it over Del Shannon's overly-lugubrious cover of a song I otherwise like.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?
