Hey! I recorded B when I was twelve and got my hands on an electric guitar for the first time. Can I have some money and people on the Internet acclaiming me as some kind of avant-garde musical genius?

A would beat most things, as it's a monster; it deserves better than being put up against this pretentious bullshit.

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

I've always found Aihiyo an interesting character, but a little also goes a long way. No way I'm wading through 15 minutes of this when I get the idea after two.

And of course A is wonderful. Their covers from that period almost always are.

25 minutes! When did I fall asleep and wake up in the Reg Cup?
a - Being me, I preferred the Isleys when they were a three-piece R&B vocal group, without Ernie's wah wah/Hendrix-light fixation. That said, there's some decent singing here, and both of the originals (a twofer!) are both decent and given the right balance of respect and improving details, although Ohio suits their sound better than Machine Gun, which tempts young Ernie into some ill-advised use of pedals. Still, I sat through it all without ever feeling that I was wasting my time. 6 / 10
b - After a minute or two, I skipped through the rest looking for something to hang on to. I might have got into it as a racket, but as a nominal cover of a Spector song, it can fuck off and die in a puddle of its own smugness. -3 / 10
Of course, if it's another 'Be My Baby' he/they are failing to play, egg on my face and 0 / 10

So that's A, if anyone was wondering

A is all kinds of aces and would win most ties. It doesn't exactly have to try hard, though, against B's useless racket.

I'm beginning to think I've misjudged BCB's taste quite badly. :o

And the scores for this are A 10000 B minus 4000000000.

I make that a victory for A then.

Christ on a bike, B, why?

If I recall correctly, A was played in a JB&S Cup and probably got my vote because I do like it a lot. In fact it is one of the best picks so far.

How many years in a row have you won BCB's Contrarian of the Year award? Can't we just buy you a plaque or build a statue and have it done with?

I think it would be funny to build a statue in honor of an iconoclast.

And it would serve you right.

In your heart of hearts, you all know that Keiji Haino is better than Hendrix, and that the Isley Brothers track is a meandering mess. I picked Aihiyo because it seems as abstracted a cover version as I've ever heard, without a real change of idiom. The guitar is genuinely lovely here though, and the slow, plodding bass would probably be ace at triple speed, but gives the track some kind of structure that Keiji's performances often lack.

I could've picked more from that same album, you know. And what's coming down the line may be worse...
