OH GOD, THOSE SYNTHS! BURN THOSE SYNTHS!!
I mean, A isn't bad, it sort of reminds me of Caravan's "A Hunting We Shall Go", but... Those synths, man... I'm getting PTSD flashbacks just thinking about them. B has nothing near that offensive, and is generally quite alright.

Oh lordy.
Broad-Churcher though I may be, even I have my limits. Really nothing even vaguely prog about B, other than sounding vaguely like King Crimson's softer side.
Tempting to abstain, but it's a whole lot better than A, which is everything I hate about prog. Endless repetition without much in the way of dynamic, lack of melody, and most of all, god help us, musicianship. And those synths. Let's not forget those synths.

Did I mention that I hate the electric violin? B. Has this by default.

Really? Even in the context of Mahavishnu Orchestra?

Blimey, I don't get the vitriol against A, a more than fine track to these ears - and nothing offensive about the syths either (maybe because I grew up listening to them). B is a beautiful track, and I agree with Loki about its proggyness. Nice start of the round.
A, just.

Donovan can fuck right. A grade A nobend of the highest order. Did I tell you I was a a gig where he insisted in talking in patois and claimed he was solely responsible for psychedlia? Jesus!
A is obviously appalling but not Donovan.

A was bright, shiny and sparkly but ultimately a bit empty and devoid of anything to make it stand out from the crowd.
B is rather nice, though I prefer the Kate Bush version.

Re: PP2017 Round 4 Match 1
A turned out surprisingly enjoyable for modern prog with some neat violin melodies. Then those cheesy synths and wonky bass lines come on full force and the track seems to lose focus after that. As for B, it's not one of my favorite Donovan tracks, but I find the direction more fluid and consistent than A. So, going with B here.

I don't mind a slice of Japanese prog and KBB are quite ok with me, but to my surprise I rather liked B.

Re: PP2017 Round 4 Match 1
two such very different things.
i do get some of the criticisms of A. in the second half in particular, it seems to become more piecemeal and constructed by bit rather than a moving, breathing whole for the run. but they are trying for a lot, and some of those sections are wonderful. (i still love fiddle, by the way.)
B, while also not my fave donovan, has such an ethereal, lovely vibe. (i saw donovan twice in the 80s, in new orleans. loved both shows. but i don't actually remember what he talked about other than george harrison, as i was in college at the time and resoundingly lit on both occasions.)
i'll take B, just. with apologies to A.
