Re: R&R Cup '17 - The Finals, Match 14
Stap me, what a contrast with round 15. Two new discoveries, one by an artist I love, and both right up my lane.
a - the only thing I knew before this by the Cadets/ Jacks was Stranded in the Jungle (containing the immortal line "great Googa Mooga get me out of here", but this is right up there with them. Fine bit of jump blues, one of the precursors of the Coasters, nice piano, and great honking sax, even if he did start his solo by playing When the Saints... Tremendous stuff, 7.5 / 10
B - omg omg here is the answer to the oft-asked (well, occasionally vaguely wondered-about) question, what exactly was Marie Knight doing between partnering Sister Rosetta Tharpe doing gospel in the late 40s and early 50s and emerging in the early 1960s with Cry Me a River as a supreme secular soul stylist? I had a vague notion she went into semi-retirement, but here she is growling and screaming through a pounding R&B song about sex and betrayal over a riff not far from Let's Have a Party, with a piano / sax break. Make that two piano/sax breaks. Be still my heart. 8 / 10
B, but A would probably win a lot of other ties

I like B a lot (especially since I can hear the Sister Rosetta connection!) but A's invitation is too inviting to pass up.

Fabulous match! How the hell are you supposed to make a choice here?? Wonderful vocal performances, and both have killer horn solos. I can't make up my mind; will come back to this.
