a - By Dog, Leroy King has a beautiful voice, Frankie Lymon with a bit more guts. I was raised on (and prefer, tbh) the lusher/and-the-kitchen-sink Ronettes/Spector/Nitzsche version, but the original has a gorgeous simplicity to it. I'm a sucker for those vamped backgrounds that provide the warp for the vocals to weave on. Damn fine piece of teen balladeering 7 / 10
b - Two great R&B hitmakers from the 1950s get together in the mid-1960s to make a soul record with seriously risque lyrics for the time. It's an entertaining listen I never heard before, but I haven't got the foggiest what it's doing here 6 / 10

A is lovely, and I'll even forgive it the "song covered by a well-known rock band" ploy 'cause it's so good - and actually much better than the Beach Boys' version, which I also love.

B is great, and hilarious - I've heard a different take and am impressed that there ARE multiple takes of it! - but it's in the wrong competition.
